Installing XGM in Vista
Hi,
Been playing XGM on XP for a while now but have made the move to vista. When installing xgm it gets to the point where it copies the last few files (based on BI I believe) and just freezes saying 9.08mb remaining in 68 files. Has anyone else had this trouble with Vista? Another option would be for someone to tell me which files are in the base xgm folder other than the data and prefences folders - they copied fine. Then I can find and manually copy the last few files.
Thanks

You have to install it with administrator rights, everything will be fine after...

That's weird, here works like a charm...
Try checking compatibility options and set them to XP, maybe it will help.

Re: Installing XGM in Vista
I've had the exact same problem with my new laptop, which has Vista. I just went into task manager and either ended the task, or ended the process, can't remember really....but I never copied any folders anywhere. I just clicked on the BI icon, and the game worked.
On a side note, I think Vista will be an awesome OS eventually, but right now, it feels very buggy at times...it won't even run AOL. Fortunately, my desktop is still XP sp2, so I can still go online.

Re: Installing XGM in Vista
Just throwing in my two cents.
This week I bought a new PC, vastly better than my beat up old laptop.
However it has Vista ... which I curse with the heat of one thousand suns.
It appears to be as bad as I have heard from gaming friends of mine. So far I have had the initial copying error where it freezes at the end of the XGM install. I have admin rights and I was able to run XGM so it appears to have copied all the files. Also in my campaign as Saba I get a freeze during loading screens, usually immediately preceding or following a battle, but occasionally during the initial load when the program is started. Probably on Average of once an hour, so I try to save as often as possible.
I cannot recall ever having a single freeze on my old machine (that wasn't caused by me doing something stupid) , even though it was running at the absolute limits of its performance. Obviously this is not XGM's fault. I'm thinking of buying a separate hard drive with Windows XP installed and running my computer off that

Re: Installing XGM in Vista
Did you try updating your video card drivers?
That solves most of the problems...

HopliteLysander: Try making sure that your PC cooling vents are operational, I remember buying a computer that didn't have the vent plugged in, which caused it to freeze on most resource demanding programs.
But yeah, Vista didn't really improve that much, rather a backwards development in my opinion.

Re: Installing XGM in Vista
SP1 is coming out soon, so perhaps it will improve somewhat.
Zarax and RedFox are correct in their advice, and I would go further and download all the updates from MS, optional and otherwise, and find the latest drivers for ALL your hardware.
Good luck!

Re: Installing XGM in Vista
teambigred: I think the file copy problem might be a conflict between the install system and vista - I'll look into it. Unfortunately I don't have vista so I can't test that sort of thing myself.

Re: Installing XGM in Vista
XGM works fine on vista, just pay attention to few things:
1) all drivers, especially the ones concerning video and audio must be up to date
2) XGM shortcut must be run as administrator
3) it's better if you give all users permission to write into the whole RTW folder and subfolder

Re: Installing XGM in Vista
It appears that the file copy problem is a bug in vista, which may have already been fixed in one of the updates. I've made some changes to the installer that might help as well (for the next release).
