    Default Horse reskin

As most of you are aware many of the horse skins suck somewhat as the saddle cloths are very dull. I thought it might be an interesting project for someone to cut their skinning teeth doing some reskinning of horses (read saddlecloths), as it's a pretty well defined thing to do and a small part of the skin, but could make a huge difference.

Well, I may suggest using Pinarius' realistic horse mod, he even had the actual models changed. They are awesome!

Yeah, they're much better modelwise and include things like saddles and so on, but it'd still be great to see some more attractive saddle cloths, especially for the richer Greek factions and Eastern factions. I love the way these Pinarius horses have saddles and reins:

So please, if someone wants to take on a horse reskin project (just redoing the saddlecloths), that'd be great!

I worked on adding these, and in fact had them all in except the white horses, which we can't use because the hvy horse and general's horse are both the same. They do look nice, but the saddlecloths are really geared to a 'vanilla' game.....so I'll have to work on even getting them to look right.

I was going to put them in the Hotfix, but decided against it.

Yeah, best to wait for some reskinning. It'd be a relatively easy job for someone to cut their skinning teeth on because it's very clear what the saddlecloth is on the texture. Anyone who's got any sort of 2D image editing skills would do a good job I think.

I'm quite happy to give some back up just to tweak things once done.

Fine, I'll give it a go, as my school teachers have generally given up on assigning homework.

To you specifically, or to everyone in general?

Well I gave up on homework, and my teachers have only just now started to lay off.

That, and I'll be away for 2 months in the summer...yeah...probably you guys should know about that...and I thought I could get a good deal of good work in in the next 3-4 weeks.

You must live in some kind of utopia or something... I need freedom like that!

@Tone: Very good that you are taking up this project. To tell you the truth, I have never noticed the saddles of the horses, probably because they are so dull and boring! Good luck!

Just so you can see what the texture looks like flat, here's one of the pinarius ones. As you can see, the saddle cloth is obvious.

The main point with skinning is keep the brightness and saturation of colours down. Build your texture in layers. Read my skinning tutorial. I can happily do any final shading if needed, but have a go, see what you can do.

This is the link to the Pinarius horses. It'd be good to keep 3 horse skins for each faction, so that'll be something like 60 skins!

Might be that I am technotarded, but whenever I open one of the .tga files with GIMP, it shows up as a 100x100 white square with no layers.

    Help?

Have you downloaded the .dds converter?

Aah, therein lies the secret - you need the .dds converter to be able to edit .dds files!

I'd LOVE to see RS using some of the remodelled horses, the vanilla ones look kind of retarded. I've kept quiet about this because we have so much other stuff to do, but I'm so happy to see it happening!

Can I add some history here? Could we get the Sarmatians/Scythians with a saddle? They're known to have had them for centuries before the date our game starts - no others (in our game, that is) had them, AFAIK. The Assyrians did, but they were further east, would the Seleucids have had them?

Armenians would have them since there was some usage of Assyrian weaponry and tactics due to their ancient wars with them. Not sure about the Seleucids.

If I'm seeing the textures right, it looks like the Scythians and some of the easterns have saddles.
