    Default help upgrading computer

    hi all,

I am upgrading my computer on a limited budget of £150 (getting married so need all the pennies). I will need your help with what I should upgrade, here are my specs

    AMD Athlon 3000
    768mb
    nvidia fx5700 ultra graphics card
    80 gb hard drive

I just want to play mtw2 with as less lag as possible

    thanks

Your graphics card is clearly the bottleneck.

Check what kind of graphics slot you have (AGP, PCI or PCIe) before buying a replacement.
I'm fairly sure you have AGP, but you'll need to check or you might end up wasting money on a card that doesn't even fit.

Then read this excellent article to find the best card in your price segment.

assuming your mb is agp , what is your power supply and what is the limit (max) of cpu your mb will take. You might have to go to the manufacturer's website to find out. At this point I would probably just bump my ram and tweak the system otherwise you will end up with a cascade effect as you try to replace one component only to realize that you have to upgrade something else. Btw congrats on the marriage

my card is agp and 128mb, I can put more ram in 2day but the system is already tweaked.

    768MB is quite sufficient.
Not many games use more than 1GB on full settings.

My old computer was a lot like yours:
    Athlon 3000+
    768MB (256 + 512)
Only big difference was my graphics card:
    ATi Radeon 9600 PRO.

I could play M2TW just fine, but had to keep the graphics low because my graphics card wasn't fast enough.
And my old graphics card was a lot better than yours.

Unfortunately GBP 150 is not enough to do a full satisfactory upgrade of mobo + cpu + graphics + memory. restricting ourselves to graphics cards for agp there are a few choices:

the 6600GT is also still good, if you can find it.

However, if you're only playing MTW2, it is still CPU limited: upgrading your graphics card won't matter, the Athlon 3000+ is the bottleneck here. So don't upgrade, buy something spontaneously for your wife . See this thread:
