    Default Emos

    Alrighty, here goes...

I remember a thread that popped up about an anti-emo youtube video/song, and whilst I was really excited at the opportunity to debate the whole phenomenon, it turned into an emo-bashing-fest and the thread was closed...

So, after tihnking about... something, and that my other thread "The Evils of the Internet" touched on emos before it died (coincidence? ) I thought I'd open up an honest debate...

Why do people (TWC people, that is) have such venomous hatred for emos - I'm curious...

To the mods - I know this thread could disolve into emo-bashing, but I'm going to try my darndest to stop that - I honestly want to promote debate and try and get rid of some ignorance and misconception surroundind emos...

PS: I'll be siding with the emos here...

I suspect it's because they openly whine about how 'terrible' their lives are, even though most of them are white, middle-class kids. This is also linked with the music. Nevertheless, I dislike the name because all music evokes some sense of emotion.

The whole, whining about how bad their lives are is, for the most part, a myth - it's just like saying all Muslims are terrorists - sure, there are ones that give the rest of the emo community a bad name..

Coincidentally, the stereotyped whining emo actually arose from forum/chatroom type environment where people would talk about their lives to random people on the internet ("Cheer Up, Emo Kid!") and was pinned to the indie/punk inspiried musical and fashion movement later...

Very true, but Marlyn Manson's music only evokes me pukes. That bastard caused me to skip eating one supper because one of his clips
Emos pretend to be unique, hard feeling poetic people. But they merely follow a fashion.
Just because a man looks gay it doesnt mean he has a deep heart. Just because he has a guitar it doesnt mean he is emotional.

But you could say that of many subcultures, and many breeds of music - why is it that emos bring out such hatred from people?

Sorry to pose questions, but I find modern sociology realy interesting, and I want to get some other perspectives...

EDIT: Oh, and the whole, slitting wrists thing is total BS, Emos are, hypothetically, open about their emotions, they don't bottle them up inside them, the stereotypical path to suicide - technically, there should be a higher rate of suicide among other subcultures than among emos

    And all Jews are bankers.

There are two emos at my school. Both of them sport the look and both of them cut their wrists. I'm not saying it's representative of the entire emo population, but you must fit the stereotype if you're also going to publicly dress up like one.

Oh there's tons of those kids where I live, they are harmless...

unlike the ghetto drug addicts that would stare at you everytime you came around...

emos get intimidated really easily... they are harmless, most of them have good manners.

    Alrighty, here goes.

Emo is a term that can be used to describe the fashion, music, or youth sub-culture that have evolved in the past two decades.

Originally the emo scene came from the harcore punk scene of Washington DC, the term "emo" being derived from the full name of the musical style, "emotional-hardcore." Whilst many will argue that emo music has nothing to do with punk music, they are, sadly, wrong. Whilst many of the features associated with punk are no-longer found in emo music, there are other obvious examples of appropriation. Emo music in its current incarnation (Typified as the "Third Wave") ranges from the stereotypical My Chemical Romance, to the heavily punk-inspired AFI, to the concert-hall style Panic! at the Disco, to the indie-country Bright Eyes.

The Emo fashion scene evolved as the music began to gather a solid fanbase. As music inspired subcultures so often are, emo fashion was modelled after the musicians who championed it. A very common misconception is that emo fashion is a watered-down verison of Goth fashion - nothing could be further from the truth. From its punk roots, emo fashion has moved in a more indie direction, and now bears much more in common with the laster than the former. Iconically heavy, side-swpt fringes and tight jeans and jumpers, are the staple of emo fashion, buit there are prominent examples of heavily punk or indie-inspired garb.

The teen subculture that is "emo" has garnered a negative reputation in the past couple of years, thanks to many stereotypes which have little basis in actual fact, and the hyping of the media (see article provided in earlier post). Emo is, essentially, no different to any other musical subculture - yes, they reflect the nature of their bands, but that is no more a negative than in the indie, punk or goth scenes.

The stereotypical self-harming emo is usually portrayed as a watered-down goth, a further example of the ignorance surrounding emos. The stereotypical "emo-fag" is again, portrayed as closer to the indie scene. And the whingy middle-class self-pitying emo is portrayed closer to punk.

The personality archetype applied to those who fit the more obvious (music/fashion) descriptors is that of a self-pitying, semi-suicidal and overly emotional whiner, and while, as with ever stereotype, there is some basis in fact, such generalisations are harmful to the entire community. Whilst they may be self-pitying, only truly sad individuals project such onto those who have no intrest in their troubles, and to blame the emo subculture for that is short-sighted and ignorant. Suicidal emos are, contrary to popular belief, no more common than any other suicidal teenager. And to accuse emos of being overly emotional is akin to accusing Christians of being religious - debatably, the entire basis of their subculture is emotional freedom, and is similar to the civil and sexual freedom espoused by hippies in the 1960.

The homosexual accusations leveled against male emos may have some basis in fact, but largely comes down to their clothing - the emo culture is, in addition to its other descriptors, a reaction to the macho-male ideal espoused by many people in past decades, and is a trait shared with many teen subcultures...

Whilst I have only covered a few of the topics concerning emos here, kindly remind me of something I have missed and I will address it in a similar manner...

teen subcultures are so unworthy of attention or discussion --- teens arent people---

lets get a bunch of yellow E's and tag all these fools and ship them to

    A. work in salt mines
    B. Keep the peace in Iraq
    C. Harvesting Methane from the ocean floor
    D. Research into Diseases(by infecting the emo's of course)
    E. Trade Emo's for various goods
    F. A host of other nefarious albiet fitting things.

this is not a bash just expressing my opinion on the "emo" movement and teenagers in general.

From the wikipedia article linked and recommended by the thread author:
When referring to a person's personality and attitude, most definitions of emo hold that an "emo person" is candid about their emotions, sensitive, shy, introverted, broken-hearted, glum, and often quiet.[6][9] Emo personality is also often connected with writing poetry, which addresses confusion, depression, loneliness, and anger, all resulting from the world's inability to understand the author. Emo poetry uses a combination of any of: a highly emotional tone, stream of consciousness writing, a simple (ABAB) or nonexistent rhyme scheme, references to the flesh, especially the heart, heavy use of dark or depressing adjectives, concern over the mutability of time and/or love, and disregard for punctuation, grammar, and/or spelling. Themes such as life is pain are common.[10]
