Astronomers Astonished by 'Monstrous' Star Explosion

    Monday, May 07, 2007
    By Ker Than

Scientists have detected a stellar explosion that is the brightest and most energetic ever recorded, and it could be the first evidence of a new type of supernova predicted to occur with only the most massive stars in the universe.

The SN 2006gy explosion occurred in a galaxy 240 million light years away, called NGC 1260, and was 100 times more energetic than typical supernovae.

At top, an artist's illustration of SN 2006gy exploding; left, an
infrared image of NGC 1260; right, an X-ray image of the same
    field.

What hurts my feable brain is that what we just witnessed today happened 240 million years ago!

    The universe is truely mind-boggling.

It's a humbling reminder of how puny we are.

Yeah, God did create an amazing universe.

Even God would be annihilated by the untamed fury of so sexually-potent a supernova explosion. God talks big, but when it comes to stars bursting in his face he always has a dentist's appointment to make.

They should try to point the hubble at the thing, if they didn't already. I wonder what kind of an image they would get?

Or is this taken from that new observatory that is considered to be similarly powerful?

This is definitely an event that I would like to somehow witness in great detail.

Me too. But I doubt I would want to be close. I hope there'll be more reports coming in soon to get more details. So whoever has a link...post it here!

Imagine being able to witness such a colossal event from a short distance away; maybe something like 100,000,000 miles. Of course, you'd be in a bubble that is uneffected by outside forces, otherwise you'd be destroyed. But, wouldn't that be a sight. Again, you'd be able to see it, because of the bubble.

I think that would be the ultimate trip... to go where ever you wanted to, in an indestructable bubble that goes as fast as you want it to. Now, that would be bad ass. IMO

You would still be destroyed. The visible light would be intense enough to kill you.

How could visible light by itsself kill you? Unless that light also brings heat.

I was just watching something on PBS about this.

Said all stars were this big long ago. Also that they together created a bunch of elements, enough so that life would eventually be possible. Which was cool because it reminded me that we are all made of little bits of stardust. Also that the Big Bang started at the size of a marble, or at least that's what he was holding in his hand.

I hope I'll be able to visit space one day.
