I'm another one who has had problems installing, both vanilla and the patches and Kingdoms, due to CRC etc errors. Anyway, last week I ran memtest86 for the first time, and guess what! One of my memory sticks gave errors. I'm currently waiting for replacements.

So, it looks like there may be something in the theory that bad memory could be causing some of these problems.

What annoys me is that I for almost a year (since I bought the memory) I have been suffering from problems in 3D games, e.g., in M2TW battles, buildings and walls will flicker between visible and invisible several times a second. I get a similar problem in Company of Heroes. This problem does not always happen so I have put up with it, although I have tried lots of things to try and fix it. I thought it might be overheating, but now it looks like it could have been this bad memory, which must have been knackered when I bought it new.

Anyway I should find out soon whether the problem has been fixed.

If you are having problems installing M2TW/Kingdoms, then please use memcheck86 to test your memory.

I copied the 2 dvds to dirs on my pc, then i opened the setup configuration file with notepad, i then changed the entry CheckMD5=Y to CheckMD5=N and saved file.
That stopped the Voice1.dat error on install, i then installed patch 1.1 no probs (i did not change the ini/conf file in the patches setup)

When i tried to install patch 2 i had the Voice1.dat prob, so i unpacked the patch and changed the ini file like i did in my first step (CheckMD5=N)
This did not work, so i followed the advise from ww2 and removed the Voice1.dat and idx from the patches unpacked dir, i then tried again and it installed no problems and asked for reboot.

I then installed patch 3 with no probs, no changes to it in any way.

I then installed Kingdoms and there have not been any probs so far, tho i am yet to test in battle as i had CTD last time i removed files from patching process. (although CTDs could well have been my OTT money and movment hacks lol)

ps: btw in my case anyway i am pretty sure its not memory issue (although that itself seems a valid reason)> I tried different ram sticks a few times, and different pc's.
I think its something to do with the media i am using itself.
Although the dual core thing could be one possible reason also, i have dualcore and have not tried setting it to one core yet.

2.When trying to install the 1.2 patch i allways get till voice_1 and then the error ocurres and patch instalation is aborted.......so here is what I do:

Get the 1.2 patch and extract it to a seperate folder, go to G:\Update2\main\english\Patch\data\sounds and delete both voice 1 files (Voice1.dat.df & Voice1.idx.df)

3.Run the patch and everything should be fine

4.Extract patch 1.3 to a seperate folder. Now here I get errors on each and every data file (data_0,1,2,3,4) so I did the same thing.

Went to G:\Update3\main\Patch\packs and deleted the entire content of the packs folder

    5.Run the 1.3 patch

    Here is the result:

-I can now play Kingdoms with no problem what so ever

-I cant play normal Medieval 2 game (I still get CTD at startup)

Well, I did all the steps you mentioned, deleting etc. The patches were indeed installed, but I have some liiitle problems.

I didn't try running the medieval game, but I don't care I wished to play the Kingdoms.

While I was playing the Americas campaign, all worked fine when playing battles with the new indian factions. The problems arised when I tried to play with the ones from the original medieval game. Before entering a battle, the game crashed each and every time I tried (even in the Americas campaign with the Spain faction) with an unknown error. I suppose this happens because the data files needed for the older factions are the same with the original game> Many of them aren't patched, due to the erasing of the whole Pack folder in the 1.03 update. Can you, or anyone else, I don't care, what I do in this situation???

This is getting more and more annoying every time! So many people have the problems with the patches and the official producers don't even care about it. No sign of official word for any possible solutions. Thanks, anyways, guys.

I had this problem and my solution isn't mentioned so far, so here it is.

I installed MTW2 and updates 1.2,1.3. it worked fine. 2 days later i needed to clear some drive space and uninstalled it. when i came to put it back on it gave the voice1.dat error. It was less than a week between the 1st install and the 2nd, so what had changed???

The penny only dropped when i read this thread and some of you talking about bad ram. After the 1st install, i'd OC my ram not by much and within parameters of the ram's company, plus memtest gave no errors either and the game had been running fine with the ram OC'd so i hadn't considered it to be a cause. But when i put my bios settings back to normal, i installed 1st time no problem

    Hope this helps others

I had this problem too. I had been trying to install the game and then patch it straight away, and the 1.2 patch had been stalling at Voice1.dat. So I uninstalled the game, restarted, cleared out InstallShield Information folder from Program Files, reinstalled the base game, launched it and then closed it down again, and was able to install the 1.2 patch no problem.

Did any one get any useful fix for this, hav'nt been here for a while, last time I gave up in dispare, then this time I notice a thread almost devoted to the problem but incredibly there still is no fix, or am I wrong

Anyway, here's what happens.. While installing disc 2 DVD of MTW2 I recieve a CRC error concerning the file voice1.dat... I can try ignore, retry, or abort.. retry does nothing, abort isn't what I want to do.. so I ignore and it goes on without a hitch. In fact, I can play the game perfectly fine (w/ the 1.1 patch).

So now I go to install the 1.2 patch and I get all the way to the end of the patch when it suddenly says that it can't install the patch because of voice1.dat.

I copied voice1.dat from the DVD-Rom that I have the disc in and moved it into the proper folder (I assume, Data/Sounds), but it still does nothing for me.

Can anyone assist in this problem at all? I've been waiting for 1.2 to come out forever and it's kind of a bummer that I can't even install it.

If you have all that stuff running while you are trying to update the game, I would say that is a lot of your problem. Turn off/ disable evrything not needed to run the update.

Is that Vista or XP? Is tha 1.2 patch a download or off the gold edition?

StUaRt is correct, the key seems to be NOT installing the 1.1 patch. I've had all the problems outlined herein, and tried all the remedies, without consistent success. BUT, if you run CCleaner (not sure if that makes a difference but it's always a good idea, rebooting first wouldn't hurt either), do a clean install of the original game, and then go directly to the 1.2 patch (which wouldn't fully install previously), you'll breeze past all the 'sounds'-related errors. Now to see if Kingdoms (and 1.3) will CORRECTLY install so battles, as well as the main game, can be operated again. Thanks all.

Like alot of you I cudn't install MEdival2: Total war without getting a Voice1.dat error. However I've been searching for 12 months and found that alot of people have followed these steps to help them. Give this a try. It didn't work for me but seemingly it has worked for many others, good luck

    Here's how (in XP):
    1. Go to Start -> Control Panel
    2. Switch to Classic View, double click System
    3. Click on the tab that says "Hardware" and then click the "Device Manager" button
    4. Click the '+' sign next to "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
    5. Double click the first entry, it will probably say "Primary IDE channel" and select the Advanced Settings tab
    6. Where it says current transfer mode, it will probably say something like "Ultra DMA Mode 2" or something (varies based on your drives/setup), what's important is that it says something other than "Not Available". If it doesn't, close the window and go back and select the other Primary or Secondary IDE channels until you find one that does (rare you would need to do this).
    7. Change the Transfer Mode pulldown from "DMA if available" to "PIO Only"
    8. Hit ok.
    9. Install the game as normal (put discs in, follow the prompts, yadda yadda). Be advised it will take 2-3 times longer because of this transfer mode.
    10. Rejoice that it worked and you can finally play the game correctly!
    11. Follow the above instructions to change your drives back to DMA.

from my experience in voice1. data error

this error comes from your uncleaned disc

    try clean it smoothly

    Cause of the problem:
    the game designers did

    how to solve:

go to directory in the PATCH folder: \main\english\Patch\data and delete the folder ´´souds`` or ´´sound`` (if this is not the directory search for the folder sounds or sound)
after this install the patch and... enjoy

the patch will be fully installed, only a few sounds That's not, but That does not make any difference, or error
    sounds still appear ...

    I discovered it myself

    sorry for my inglish :S

I've been getting the same problem with RTW. Now I'm fed up, I'll just download the game. I'm normally opposed to piracy, but when I've paid full retail price of a game (I bought it the year it came out) and it won't work for the billionth time I think Sega ows me.

Ranting will only get you ignored for one. Sega will never read this for two. Where did you download the game(s) from?
