can't install 1.2 patch.. voice1.dat

First off, let me say that I've seen a lot of people asking this question by doing google searches and forum searches, but nobody's come up with an answer yet. So I hope to help not only myself, but several other people here. Hopefully this can be a place to brainstorm.

Anyway, here's what happens.. While installing disc 2 DVD of MTW2 I recieve a CRC error concerning the file voice1.dat... I can try ignore, retry, or abort.. retry does nothing, abort isn't what I want to do.. so I ignore and it goes on without a hitch. In fact, I can play the game perfectly fine (w/ the 1.1 patch).

So now I go to install the 1.2 patch and I get all the way to the end of the patch when it suddenly says that it can't install the patch because of voice1.dat.

I copied voice1.dat from the DVD-Rom that I have the disc in and moved it into the proper folder (I assume, Data/Sounds), but it still does nothing for me.

Can anyone assist in this problem at all? I've been waiting for 1.2 to come out forever and it's kind of a bummer that I can't even install it.

Just curious...Have you tried cleaning your disk?I know it sounds strange but I have seen installs fail because dust (I assume it was dust anyway) on the DVD was preventing the optical drive from reading that particular file off the disk.It's worth a shot, I mean you've got nothing to lose .

If you manage to install the game, make sure you install 1.2 over 1.0 and not 1.1

Actually that's something to try right there.. I did have 1.0 installed.. I was doing this off of a fresh install of MTW2 (took it back out again since the patch was released)

I'll have to try that.

As for the disk.. it "looks" immaculate. I ran a piece of cheesecloth over it lightly, but it's been doing this since the 1st time I installed the game, so I don't think that's it. Also a lot of people seem to be getting this CRC error on voice1.dat.. so I don't know. I'll try installing 1.1 THEN 1.2.

I've got the same problem, except after I reinstalled it changed and started messing about sfx.dat too. All the dat files in fact, because if I remove them from the 1.2 installer, it installs without a problem, but of course the game is unstable and crashes either on startup or when fighting a battle (got it to load a campaign once). At the moment I'm installing the game along with the patch on another computer, intending to copy the files it refuses to install over to this comp. It's the only help I can give at the moment with this hugely annoying problem.


Edit: Wohoo, it worked! Quite a bad workaround which probably only will work if you have access to another computer on a network or with a DVD burner. Still, it works!

I am with you, my brothers. Same SFX.dat, then voice1.dat. Reinstalled vanilla but got CRC error about voice1.dat. Ignored and copied it myself and got 1.00 running but when I run the patch- same results. Installing 1.1 before 1.2 didn't work. Going from 1.00 to 1.2 didn't work. Tried install from harddrive, same problems. My discs are in perfect condition, as I am sure yours are too. I'm not sure I can even try Leatherpenguin's work-around. I hope somebody figures this one out.

I've got the same problem.
When installing 1.0 from the dvds it complains about voice1.dat, I chose 'ignore' and tried installing 1.2. At the end, complains again about voice1.dat, intallation can't continue.
So I uninstalled, cleaned the discs just in case, reïnstalled, same problem (didn't try installing 1.2 this time though as I thought it'd be fruitless)
Tried to install by copying everything to the HD, same problem, only this time
sfx.dat...

running windows xp pro x64 by the way.

Sooner or later someone will get to the bottom of this. I've seen it posted elsewhere and from multiple gamers some with SFX.dat but almost all with voice1.dat.

It would be a real problem installing it on a virgin computer, patching it, then burning files to bring back for my own messed up install/patch.

haha, sweet. I'll have to try this on my girlfriends laptop. Still seems like a long drawn out process just to get a patch to work, and I'd love to hear if anyone has any other ideas.

Not only do you have to do an clean install, but also an do you have to clean youre registry. I used registry distiller 1.03. This should work.

Well I don't think that the registry is the only cause of the problem, if it is at all. The Windows installation I've been trying to install M2TW on has never had an install of M2TW on it before, and it gave problems straight away.
I will give the registry cleaning a shot though, perhaps it's interfering with an RTW install?

I have the same problem and already started a thread about it one month ago after release of the leaked patch. Unfortunatly I didn't get an answer.

So I lent me another copy of MTW2 from a videostore, made a copy and installed it. I used my own CD-Key. No problem It worked. After some testing I found the Setup.cab to be the broken file. Not the voice1.dat or the other sound-files, because I could install the game using disc 1 form the store and my own disc 2.

So, after the official release of 1.2 I re-installed the game to apply the official patch, using the backups I made, but surprisingly it didn't work this time: "Voice1.dat doesn't match the informations in the setup.cab. (Ignore, Abort, Retry)"...

I also wrote an Email to SEGA about the problem ONE month ago, but didn't recieved an answer yet. Great support...

I've had some success in installing 1.2 it seems.
What I did was remove every trace of a previous M2TW installation, including registry and temp files (in documents and settings/user/Local Settings/Temp/). After that I removed the install shield information in (Program Files/), rebooted and installed 1.0
This gave the voice1.dat error again, but when installing the 1.2 patch it didn't complain anymore.

The strange thing is that when I start M2TW and go to options, it still shows 1.0 ...Now let's try starting a battle...
Oh and the launcher crashes too Quite a crappy piece of software this.

On what I assumed to be a clean install I got the voice1.dat CRC error, retry, nope, ignore, then completed install. Then installed 1.01 which worked, but when installed 1.02 again the same error voice1.dat. Did it again with a patch from another dl site and this time its SFX.dat on patch install. Used 1st 1.02 patch again and got voice1.dat error!

About the best I can do is install the game and update it to 1.01 and play it like there is no patch at all. I am very much not happy. Can anyone assist?

After one month and two updates by myself all I heard from my MTWII-Support Germany (SEGA) was... yes, nothing...

No i'm getting angry! First they release the patch over a month later than announced, then it doesn't work to everyone (problably based on a problem I posted over a month ago) and finally I don't get any personal answer, only automatically generated answers...

I would play the game using version 1.1 and some of the great mods around here, but the shield-bug is really pissing me off... (sorry for that expression)

Ontopic: The problem is not based upon the patch, but to a failure in our DVDs. We all had an error when installing the game vanilla (voice.dat, sfx.dat or similar). The problem doesn't has any effects to the gameplay in vanilla or 1.1 (1.1 doesn't change the sound-files). So, what CA could do:

1. Give us a fine support, replacing our DVDs
2. Give us another patch, which replaces the voice.dat without an error

Unless a certain number of discs were factory made with an error in the same exact file and then only manifests a problem when 1.02 is released. All those voice1.dat files were not a problem when originally installed, or after 1.01. Only after 1.02 was run. I just don't know.

Another thing I noticed is that when I go to manually put voice1.dat into the sounds folder under program files it is dated Oct. 5, 2006 and all other files are dated Oct.6th, 2006. I also have the early released "limited edition" version, but I don't think it's relevant.

Voice1.dat and SFX.dat were fine on our original installs. Those files only became a problem when 1.02 patch said they were invalid. In an attempt to repair the file with a reinstall, all of a sudden there's a CRC error and the files are no good; yet I can get the game to run fine with 1.01 patch, just not the long awaited and heavily tested second "official" patch. I can't keep reinstalling this game. Smoke is coming out of my ears.

I tried several times to update my M2TW, with reinstalling the game, to delete every entry of M2TW in the registry, to use different downloads of 1.2 and no success at all with this patch. Every time this error...

My previous post can be ignored. This patch is really the worst patch installer I've ever seen.
The patch appeared to work because it installed the files to the default folder, whereas I had installed the game to C:\Games\M2TW\
So my M2TW game continued to work, but wasn't actually patched at all

Now that I did everything again, but with the default directory, things are as before again, errors....
