    Default British Local Authority Elections

Let the debate and speculation start, today is the day when millions of britons go to the polls to vote for County Councils, District Councils, Borough Councils, the Welsh Assembly and the Scottish Parliament!

Tories are expected to make some sweeping gains, and labour some major set backs. SNP are expected to make big gains in the Scottish Parliament that may pave the way for independence.

I've already been out and voted for my borough council, don't mind saying, i voted Conservative.

My borough went from Labour-held (1997) to Conservative in 2005. It's difficult to see Labour clawing back here especially as our MP actually seems to listen to people. Nationally, I think scepticism of the conservatives that I feel is still felt by many will stunt any large gains, but disapointment in Labour will give the Tories a much rosier prospect.

Yeah I like labour nationaly, but they seem to think they'll never win a set where we are (tory since before 1997, thats the definition of a tory safe seat).
However for once the tories are talking sence, so they'll have a reason for the automatic win (the libs just annoy me, one said labour was as mistrusted economicly as the tories were in 95, idiot).

Anyway, it looks like scotland got bored with the snp's just before the election and the lib dems will make the deciding vote.

Well im going to be going out to vote soon, trying to keep the Conservatives from gaining the local council. Ours is the only Lib Dem one in the region. Also probably be voting for a Green candidate.

I would expect the Tories to blow both labour and the Lib Dems out the water, I’m at work at the moment but I’m voting as soon as I get back
    .
The Lib Dem candidate lost my vote when he interrupted me during my dinner canvassing for my vote………big mistake.

Just voted and have to say not to impressed, we had three candidates, Lib Dems (who sent out two leaflets and there normal newsletter and visited), Tories (one leaflet no visit) and UKIP (found out they where standing in the Lib Dem news letter!). I hate having so little choice in local elections, more so in national ones, and its shocking that in my entire town those are the only three choices, I think thats five seats their not even contesting!

I think overall people get it wrong at local elections, they have nothing to do with national government and yet people choose who to vote for on that bases more often than not, or so it seems.

I like Mr Blairs tactic of announcing that he'll be making an announcement next week about his future as PM, sort of saying 'hey, I'm off soon, don't punish poor Gordon'.

The BNP, unfortunately, will take up plenty more seats than before. Reminds me of a certain continental country in the 1920s.

Yeah they will get more votes but not enough to be compared to the German National Socialists of the 1920's.

Early 1920s. Look it up, they had a minority til Hitler got the chance to rile people up at his show trial.

The BNP to the majority of this country symbolise the Nazis anyway. Yes similar circumstances (if you want to look for the similarities) but we all have hindsight now and better information etc. I very much doubt we the sensible voters of Britain (who don't get sucked into their concepts) will not let them have their way.

The BNP will collect it's usual amount of mainly protest votes. Unless your one of their committed activists you know there never going to reach a position of any power, their reputation alone precludes anyone from wanting to associate too closely with them. What's needed, in my opinion, is a more respectable, mainstream party of the right. There's a vast swathe of people out there that feel important issues are no longer reprsented by the major parties and that includes the Tories which should be the traditional home for the right.

And so today I voted BNP. Pretty pointless, of course, especially as I live in the traditional Labour heartland of a Labour City. But canvassing opinion in my local, I'm not the only one voting this way. There was only 4 candidates standing in my ward, BNP and the big 3. I won't vote for Blairs party, I don't like Cameron and I would'nt vote Lib Dem if they were the only party left on earth. I like many people today voted locally but on national issues.

I would have thought the BNP would stand to gain quite a few votes in traditional labour heartlands simple because their policies are very sociallist orientated which would appeal to disillusioned socialist labour voters.

lib dems were very complacent here today

they hold our ward at the moment, and run the borough council in coalition with the tories.

us tories had a massive canvassing team going, we all had Vote Owen for Keele, Vote Blue Go Green T-shirts, we had balloons, we had music, we had placards we had, above all, many people.

labour had a handful of signboards and 4 people

the greens made a very good showing, i wouldn't be surprised if they come third or even second here. they are rather popular, but council wide, are only fielding two candidates.

but the lib dems, the candidate herself was the only person i saw out campaigning... no team, no support network, nothing. very complacent

Sure I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is Im not. I honestly feel that America is the best country and all other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.
