Default United Methodist - Who are they?

    Hey guys.

I was having trouble getting into colleges for a few reasons, and to my luck, one that sounded good called Emory and Henry finally accepted me. However, I just found they were a religious college, though I am not sure to the degree they are. I don't think they require that I be of their faith, but where other colleges have no faith, this one does.

Can I ask what the Methodists are like? Are they 'laid back'? Evangelical, as in the bible belt, southern variety? I'm not a god-hating atheist but I am a private agnostic, and I'm only curious as to what kind of environment I'll be having on Campus. Suffice to say, I'm waiting on 2 more applications and planning to hit up a lot of rolling ones, and if those don't work I'll go here for a semester, but I'd like to know what I'll be getting myself into.

Thanks Thanatos, but everyone has linked that. I appreciate the help, but it leaves me guessing on the nature of their church. What is preached and what is practiced can be two different things.

I know a religion varies from person to person, but for instance, a southern baptist church will probably be a bit more inclined to evangelicalism than say, some other sect.

And it's also that I am wondering what most guys going to college are. Is this methodist church being a part of the school going to make all the girls all puritan-ish?

Methodists are like every other religious group, they have people on the left, and on the right. I a Methodist (former United) and can say that the modern day Methodist are laid back, and will accept just about anyone. I got sick of it real fast, so I left. Never really joined another group, so I just claim to be a Southern Methodist (oddly enough there is a Southern Methodist Church). So in short I don’t see them not letting you in, and if there students are anything like the Methodist I have seen at Church then you wouldn’t be able to really tell a difference between them, and you. Unless you curse the Lord Jesus Christ, or God. Then again as I stated they could very well be different from the ones I have seen. fyi I am from Western Maryland.

    Ahiga:
Methodists in general, so my experience, are nice, sometimes a bit emotional people who search to improve their "heart" and "morals". My teacher in Greek at University was a Methodist, not a United but a Methodist, and he always said "You do not need to know (when his students desperately looked onto their lines of text), you need to see!" So much about methodists. If you have the chance to go to that colleage and the people overthere are reasonable, you may not miss the chance. Be simply aware that 17th century Cambridge Platonism is no longer a valid position even in Cambridge/UK nowadays.
