Ive noticed on the some threads you guys use "of Damascus" or "of Aleppo" it might be better to use "man" which in Arabic means "from" so:
"man Dimashq ": From Damascus, or one could say
"Dimashqee" or "Suree ": A damascene/ Syrian.

Hey Beuchamp, I got your PM. Thanks for the input!

One policy I've wanted to keep in Broken Crescent is that it need to be friendly to as wide an audience as possible, yet stay immersive.

So while its a great idea to have truly arabic naming styles..the policy is that common words like "of" or "archer" or "cavalry" will remain english.

But, your ideas like "Dimashqee" or "Suree" are quite doable. Since its basically last name. Perhaps you could use this thread to compile a list of suitable arabic names that the Egyptians and Abbasids could get.

Damascus: Dimashq
Jerusalem: al-Quds
Cairo: al-Qahira
Alexandria: al-Iskandaria
Aleppo: Halab
Tripoli: Triblus

It looks like you guys have translated them pretty well already! Ill post those "Egyptian/Syrian" names soon.

Beauchamp, this you can find quite easily. Even on wikipedia they have the original Turkish, Farsi, etc... names for the provinces on the BC map. Just wanted to let you know.

i don't know that to say about arabian citys but it is imposible to rename
Jerusalem to al-Quds as it was not only the place there muslims or Arabs lived but jews and Christians as well

Well, since the Muslims had owned it since the crusades that is why I suggested calling it Al-Quds (one must remember, that the city has three names). Al-Qahira is Cairo's proper name, meaning "the victorius" al-iskandaria is a transliteration granted, but it was in Misr under Muslims. Dimashq is a levantine dialectical name for the city, even though under Rome etc. it may have been referred to "Damascus", Dimashq is the proper name. Aleppo (Halab) is also an English "bastardization" of the word.

I agree in general. But the issue is this: how many arabs are going to play this mod? I really doubt that many. I need to keep the core audience in mind. Cities like "Aleppo" might not be the correct name but its a lot more familiar to our players.

What do you think of Dimashq-as-Sham ? Where does this come from and who uses/used this name for Damascus ?

I am not arab, but Halab is easily connectable to Aleppo in my mind; it does sound better since the center of the map is not Rome, but the Persian Gulf.
How about Ierushalaïm for Jerusalem? The other names are quite recognisable and nice, I like the idea!

I think i'll take your suggestion and replace all the "of XXX" with its propers arabic style name. Could you do a basic list for me? Like "of Aleppo" would be "Halabee"? Stuff like that. I have regions map posted you can find all the existing places there.

Very good idea. Just the type of stuff I was looking for. And, above all, easily implemented.

And about the names. I understand that it might be unrealistic. But really the M2TW engine only allows for FIRSTNAME and LASTNAME... and thats it. Only the traits system can really simulate the "lineage" issue.

For provinces we can use english names or native if it's very close to english. And please use Jerusalem, after all was under crusader control at beggining of this mod.
