I've had just about enough with Distance-To-Capital penalty!
The unrest doesn't seem a problem at all, its the stupid corruption!
I'm fine with devastation -- but how do I get rid of corruption?
Either will work, please and thanks!

set new capital.. dont use one you started with >_<
^ same here! We're tired of finding alternatives to a problem that ruins every campaign!
Try under descr_settlement_mechanics.xml:
<factor name="SIF_CORRUPTION">
<pip_modifier value="1.0"/>
</factor>
Reducing the pip modifier value will reduce the corruption effect. You can use decimal values.
<factor name="SOF_DISTANCE_TO_CAPITAL">
<pip_modifier value="1.0"/>
<castle_modifier value="0.2"/>
<city_modifier value="0.5"/>
<pip_min value="0"/>
<pip_max value="16"/>
</factor>
Reducing the pip modifier value will result in less unrest in distant holdings.
If you want to modify other settings in the file, SIF relates to income, SOF relates to public order, SPF relates to population growth.

Where is descr_settlement_mechanics.xml located?![]()
http://files.filefront.com//;7404394;;/
there you guys go!
It has DRASTICALLY reduced distance to capitol penalties... it's practically non existant now.
Download from the link, then extract the file "descr_settlement_mechanics" into your data folder, should work for any mod...if it's a mod folder you're using, just put it in the data of it.
Example:
Lands to conquer mod, the directory would be...
mtw2/LandsToConquer/data
(lands to conquer mod folder might be called something different)
NOTE: This is the 1.2 settlement_mechanics file, there is a slight chance it won't work with 1.1, but I'm pretty sure it will work, pm me if it does not.

Does the effect for lowering the distance to capital penalty take place instantly or do you have to start a new campaign to see the effect?

This change does not require you to restart your campaign.
Ok, but i changed the:
- <factor name="SOF_DISTANCE_TO_CAPITAL">
<pip_modifier value="1.15" />
to:
- <factor name="SOF_DISTANCE_TO_CAPITAL">
<pip_modifier value="0.65" />
But still the distance to capital penalty in jerusalem was 75%
Maybe i have to change the capital and change it back for the game to recalculate it, ill try that.
EDIT: nope. that didnt work

Your code should be fine. The game is most likely ignoring your modified file. Assuming you are working in the default Medieval 2 data folder, you probably need to set the io file_first option in your Medieval 2 cfg file. Check near the beginning of this link for how to do that:
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=70942
The thread also has other information that could be helpful to you, so it's worth looking over.
Another helpful thread, especially if you plan on making a mod in the future is here:
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=75819
This shows how to create a mod folder that allows you to modify things without messing with the original game files.
That is not the problem. I was using Lands to Conquer and the file was already in the M2TW\landstoconquer\data folder.

Moved to Text Editing and Scripting.
Yeah, distance to capital causing corruption comes from the Civilization series, not from history. The causes of corruption are completely unrelated to communication with the capital. I didn't like this feature in Civ, and I don't like it here.
I found out what was wrong. I was checking if it had worked in jerusalem, but it still showed 75% becouse that was the max, and i didn't change that value. It was working all along.
I lowerd the max value from 15 to 10 which lowered the max penalty to 50%. Now it is a bit easier to control crusading cities far away from your home
