Hello, I played this mod until late night, yesterday! I think it's AWESOME!!!
I was born in Genoa, so I'm very excited to see a mod that consents me to play with my beloved faction. I am interested in local history so I wanted to give some historical notes, if you like, to be implemented in.
I' very happy to play with Genoa, and I saw in 1.2 version, there was a little retexturing of Genoese Faction.
It is good, but their troops still look a little greeny. While this is not important, maybe you should change a little bit the shields, adding more red crossess in a white background, more realistic than green ones.
I cut and paste this post that i originally posted in another mod's forum. Hope you find it useful.
Families
The ruler of Genoese Republic was the "Podestà" until 1339, when was replaced by a "Doge" which means "Duke". This is the same Venetians' ruling title.
I saw that noble families are still the Lombard ones, so if you plan to add some historical family names in this faction, the most important are: Doria, Fieschi, Spinola, Grimaldi, Malaspina, Brignole, Cattaneo, Adorno, Boccanegra, Cambiaso, Durazzo, Della Volta, Della Porta, De Mari, Centurione, Di Negro, Embriaco, Fregoso.
Troops
The most famous troops are the Genoese Crossbowmen, already included in the Milan Faction of the original M2TW.
These troops could be used also as mercenaries, if the Republic agreed, so you can make these Crossbowmen even a merc troop, if you want.
But the genoese also had a powerful galley fleet, which consented them to win two important naval battles (Meloria and Curzola) in the 13th Century, against Pisa and Venice.
My suggestion is to make a special naval unit called "Genoese Galley" with some bonuses in combat.
Genoese Army was made by "soldier-citizens" which provided weapons and armor by theirselves, so their militia was slightly above the other countries' militias. This in already implemented giving Genoese access to "Italian Militia" troops.
Colours
Genoese symbol was a red cross in a white flag (St. George's cross), the same of modern England (which they probably inherited by Genoese ships, even if this is not widely known).

So the Genoese faction should have white and red textures, symilar to Polish ones. Another symbol of Genoa is also a golden Gryphon or Griffin.
I saw there was a litte retexturing of troops. It is good, but their troops still look a little greeny. While this is not important, maybe you should change a little bit the shields, adding more red crosses in a white background, more realistic than plain green ones.
Merchantilism
Genoese merchants were very important for the developement of the town, so I suggest to give this unit some bonuses for commerce. I also suggest let Genoa start with a larger Port.
Weaknesses
The worst thing genoese had to face in their history, were the rivalries between their noble families. You can make this happen, i think, by modifying the rebellion %, or in some way, I'm not a modder, I'm just an amateur historian
Objectives
Genoa had three great enemies: Pisa, Venice and the North Africa Lords. It was a close friend of Byzantium. It only took armies against Holy Roman Empire once, against Frederic II (we were neutrals during Barbarossa's reign), and not in an open way, and it had very good relations with the Pope, partecipating with some decisive effort at the first Siege of Jerusalem in 1099, and even provided a Pope: Innocenzo IV (1243-1254).
So my suggestion for a campaign, is that Genoa should start allied with Byzantium, and at War with Venice. If you plan to add a Tuscany Faction, then Genoa was for 2 centuries at war with Pisa. I don't think Genoa must have HRE as an Enemy to be eliminated in a short campaign, but this is not my concern
I hope you found these informations useful. If you need some others, please tell me
I'm looking forward to see your mod finished
Bye all!!!
