Starcraft 2 Confirmed

Finally, after all these years the sequel to one of the most popular RTS games still around is being developed. Check out the press release!

It has been confirmed that StarCraft 2 is being developed in 3D, a new race has been added and existing units’ characteristics will have many changes. Additional details will only be revealed to certain parts of WWI.

However, trustworthy information is being leaked from previous Blizzard employees, and through an acquaintance of ex-Blizzard North employees, StarCraft 2’s development and its announcement at the WWI has been confirmed.

MBC Game’s Lee Sang-Ho head said “Frankly, it’s half anticipation and half worry. If SC2 is released in a form that is compatible with e-sports broadcast, there will be many new gamers and the entire industry will develop. However if it comes out in a form that is not easy to broadcast, like WarCraft 3, StarCraft fans will focus on the sequel while the original league will suffer a decline”, expressing a cautious mindset.

OnGameNet’s StarCraft commentator Um Jae-Kyung said “Blizzard has probably already grasped the difference between this nation’s gamers and foreign gamers’ difference in inclination through WarCraft 3. So I’m hoping for a more balanced structure, a structure with e-sports in mind. However, I believe that the e-sports league will continue to focus on StarCraft and a new league focusing on StarCraft 2 will form, the industry growing bigger as a result. As a gamer, I’m really looking forward to it.

Personally I have my doubts about SC2 beating CoH's tactical glory but one can dream; after all, it's StarCraft, one of the granddaddy's of the RTS genre.

Wow...StarCraft will definitely beat CoH. The original came out on 1992, and people are still playing that game. Blizzard wont disappoint me.

Hmm, leaked info doesn't mean confirmed. It's not confirmed until there is an official announcement.

The expansion pack Brood War came out on 1998. The original SC was released in 1992.

Definitely not '92 - im not even sure if Warcraft 1 was out in 92..

Anyway, would be good to see a sequel to starcraft - was bound to happen sooner or later

Wow, it really must have been great to win all those awards and still be the number one selling PC game 6 years after it's release!

Starcraft was released on April 1st, 1998. Brood War was released on November 30th, 1998.

If the battle in StarCraft was like Medieval II....that'll be ****ing awesome. Imagine controlling 1000 Marines/Goliaths/Wraiths etc, in the battlefield. With a big ass battlecruiser hovering above the sky...and you can zoom in, to witness the epic battle.

I put so many hours into that game as a kid...

Haha, I love that and Brood War tons and I still play them now and then, not as often as Warcraft III but that made me laugh 'cause I'm only a year older than you and it made me feel old to think of how long ago I was a kid... haha, I was playing it in high school.

As far as tactical play, well you can't compare them until we know which route blizzard will take with SC2. The original SC can't be compared to CoH since they play differently. SC is a traditional rts with arcade gameplay while CoH takes a much more realistic approach (for a mainstream game). I would like to see a realistic approach to SC giving a predator/aliens type feel (ie serious, dangerous and gritty, something like the SC in-game movies) with proper tactics (eg cover, flanking) but this may not be the direction blizzard wants to take.

I'd say Dune 2 was the original RTS, at least the one that made the "structure" that the majority of RTS's follow, but Starcraft/Warcraft was one of the granddaddies, for sure, following that gameplay structure which we call today RTS.

Also, I'm not saying that Starcraft 2 was confirmed, according to the article I read it will be confirmed at the World Wide Invitational, on the 19th of May 2007. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

@Digital Marine: SC came out in April 1, 1998. Brood War in November 20, 1998.
Also, like said above, SC won Best Strategy Computer Game at Origins for the year of 1998... the year it was released.

I don't know blizzard has totally lost me on WOW, and it seems to me that they only ever focus on one game at a time. Which would be ok if they where able to put one out yearly. Hell I would take one every two years, but ever since the Warcraft 3 (which was good not great) it seems they where are only focusing on one of there franchises. Call me burned but i feel blizzard could have done better on telling us what they where doing. And if the zerg rush is still capable in the game then you can still throw tactics out the door.

I'd call starcraft the 'King'. The genre was already well-established at that stage. Starcraft didn't do anything that hadn't been done before, it just delivered it in a more atmospheric package with proper online gaming. Dune 2 is the grandaddy, with games like warcraft and c&c firmly establishing the structure. I would say SC is the granddaddy of online RTS, battlenet was a significant development in the rts genre
