    Default Do you trust microchips?

I don't know how to make a poll but I'd like a general "Raise your hand if you trust computers." kind of deal.

I for one do not trust computers. I hate talking to them on the phone, I hate using them at the bank to get money. And above all I hate getting flipping spyware and my stupid OS that uses WAY too much ram. I don't trust electronic vote machines either, we've all seen what havoc they can cause.

Wow you don't trust computers for all the wrong reasons.

I distrust computers, because I know that the person who is programming them can maybe get 40-50% of questions right at exam time (the averages in CS tends to be quite low), and that the program will do weird things if he makes one mistake in a several million line program.

You do realize that written exams have about zero to do with coding ability? I've known plenty of people to get PERFECTS on all the hard programs with no help(in fact I'd be asking THEM for help), but had trouble breaking 60% on an exam.

Oh and the average is 60-70%. Just so you know.

Of course, if you knew about the 4.+ gpa students who have such a hard time with tests that they got a 19 on the ACT over four tries you'd know that test taking just doesn't rank high on some people's skill sets.

    So you're a 19th century person trapped in a 21st century world.

First of all, I think you are taking a joke slightly too seriously. Secondly, quite a large number of CS classes test programming ability (as in writing a program) as a test. If someone is making mistakes left and right on the test, it should be reasonable to assume that he will make mistakes once in a while when actually programming. And as for the average, I don't even think that is worthy of a response - even different professors teaching the same class in the same school have wildly differing test scores.

I trust a microchip about as far as I can throw one!

You can't write a program worth the space it takes up on a hard drive as a 3 or 4 hour test, forget the usual 50-90 minutes.

And mistakes are EXPECTED. This is why EVERY engineering project has a phase we call testing. Or did you think that CS was the only department that averaged 60-70% on tests? I mean, I don't know about you, but I've also seen plenty of engineers unable to pass a Thermodynamics test to save their lives, but when their senior project comes around they're designing and testing working products like no other.

You only laugh because he's not as strong as The Seven Million Dollar Man. At least he still has his sanity.

Nonsense, the Seven Million Dollar Man was Barney Millers. The above is the Six Million Dollar Man. Don't believe me? I watched the episode with the two of them in it this morning.

No, it's the one where our hero meets the 7MDM for the first time.

    I agree with Gaiden.

Whether or not you can catch a syntax error on a test has almost nothing to do with coding. This is what bug testing is for.

I trust microchips as they are at the moment, but any further developments as microchips in people etc is complete rubbish and should never happen. The chips shouldn't take over our lives on a grand scale - a human should always be in control of what chips he/she uses in everyday life.
Wouldn't want this to turn into some Matrix parallel...

There was also a twilight zone on everybody having implants. I normally detest the new season of twilight zone, but this one episode was good.

Everybody got a virus, and started spazzing out. It took the one non-implanted man to save everyone.

forgot to write my opinion: what's there to (dis)trust? they're more reliable than humans (though less versatile) and besides 9/10 errors with a computer happen because of retarded-acting human users.
