Default Is this game good now?

Ive been meaning to buy Medieval TW2 for a while. However, when I lurked these forums a few months ago, I noticed many threads complaining about bugs as well as balance issues (overpowered inquisitors, overpowered archers, etc). I'm wondering, have the patches made the game playable now? I notice there dont seem to be many complaint threads now. Did people just stop complaining, or has the game been patched to a point where the majority consensus is that it is enjoyable?

oh and btw, I played Medieval TW 1 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was still a newb, but I beat it a grand total of three times: twice with almohad, once with england, and had a game going with turks but the backup got corrupted after I had formatted my hard drive. how does this game compare to medieval 1?

there is still many bugs.. but 1.2 patch should be out anytime ( we hope so )
you can play with some addon which fix gameplay

as for archers. i never found them overpowered ( not a big fan of archers )

well i never did rly play english , which got best archers in game ( they say O_O )

its rather how good player play , i saw some post where guy was asking how to win " xxx " which looked rly simple , but guy was new, those " overpowered " topics might been cuz ppl had no idea how to play this game ,
everyone who can control multiple horses , will easy take out any archers, even if they are protected by spearmens

Even with the bugs that the game has, it's still an enjoyable and playable game. 1.1 patch fixed a few bugs, and I'm playing with the leaked 1.2 patch which seems to have fixed the game alot, it's an even more enjoyable play now.

As for how does it compare to Medieval 1 well that depends on the person, some people have said they prefer 2 others 1, I prefer 2 myself for many reasons

As far as archers being overpowered I don't think they are, I've played with every factiona tleast once and there are always ways to take out the ai archers, or if someone feels that the archers they are using are overpowered they don't need to train them. Though I do feel the inquisitors are a bit toos trong, they are hard to assassinate, and it's really frustrating when they take out 3 of your generals, but yet again in history an inquisitor was like the voice of the Pope himself and what they say goes, only answering to the Pope himself so maybe thats why they are powerful

It's a good game, it's just not finished.

With MTW i played it to death unmodded. I can't imagine playing M2TW without mods. Vanilla is weak IMHO.

True, it is good just not finnished, just people love to point out all it's fault and often forget to point out it's good points

Its a decent playable game on vanalli 1, gets a bit better on 1.1 and the gameplay becomes really fun on vanila 1.2. add mods on and your in.

The real question is: Is this not never a game worth feeling bad about, without knowing if it is good? But what's that without knowing the bad to begin with?

it was good right when 1.1 was released months ago...

mtw2 is vastly better than rtw, it makes rtw look so stupid.

But, mtw2 has incredible battles, better than mtw1, the animations are sick, the campaign AI is awesome, modding capabilities are really really far reaching...

to be realistic, outside of just my opinion that mtw1 was better, the only two things mtw1 had that was better was the two dimensional campaign, and the multiple crusades that could be called rather than 1 crusade per 40 turns...

to be honest on mtw2, crusades and jihads do not exist, they are almost a non existant feature, where as in mtw1, they were constant and gave a really dark/religiously hateful feeling to it == "medieval" feeling that is.

other than that mtw2 is improved in everything else.

At time it's an annoying game full of deficiencies, but then at other times it's amazing...

Some of my battles just blew me away...and not just because they were violent either...The landscape, the weather, the soldiers marching en masse up a long grassy slope...it was REAL...

Yes a few good points here Cadmium. I am a true devoted fan of the series, but there are a few things that really annoy me from time to time, like troop placement inside cities and castles.

Overall, this game is better than any other Medieval games in the market by so far it is unmeasureable. However, what features the Vanilla game lacks, modders have managed to improve upon.

Therefore, Fishjie this is simply a MUST buy game in its present state .

Mr Cad has it again: sometimes the game is a great experience, others it's a bunch of BS. When you fight a really close battle, with archers blazing away and infantry slaughtering and cavalry charging away like here's no tomorrow and you win or lose such a crazy battle, it's the best game yet. When you deploy on a hill and everyone is stuck because there's mountain all around you and you have to wait forever for the battle to end its a *****.

Remember way back when we were eagerly awaiting the coming of RTW and they said that terrain would be much more important and that certain units could use terrain to avoid other units? Like fleet footed slingers could dart up steep rocky slopes to avoid cavalry? or certain archers could go into swampy ground where heavy cavalry couldn't follow? Nuh uh...never happened, not in RTW or BI or in M2TW...the whole terrain model is a joke. Cavalry charges on 45 Degree mountain sides...ridiculous. And maybe troops get tired out but I haven't seen it yet. Not like in STW.

This whole terrain thing is right at the heart of tactics...if they want to create a game that provides serious tactical battles they should get a handle on the entire terrain issue. And that is something that shouldn't be that hard to work out...

I'm getting seriously sick of preposterous mountain battles....

Conversely, imagine if you had a battle in a swampy terrain with narrow dry passages where heavier units both mounted and on foot could travel while lighter units without armour could dart through the swampy patches...imagine how much more interesting those battles could be...

well it took a long time but i finally bought this game a few days ago! i patched to 1.2 and its been pretty fun and captures the addictiveness of mtw1. i'm not a huge fan of the 3d campaign map, i prefer the flat 2d map of the original. its a lot easier to see whats going on and where all your units are. but i guess the 3d map makes logistics an issue and adds more depth to the game.

the battles are great fun, but one problem with the ai i've noticed is that when i am on the attack, i can shoot the enemy with artillery all day long and they just stand there taking it. ?!?!?!? its only when i shoot them with archers that they will respond. otherwise they will chill out as their companions are being set on fire. however, when i am on the defense, they will usually attack right away, hence i wont be able to use artillery.

Interesting huh? They respond sometimes, if they don't use up your art. I have had battles at 6x speed just launching art. at the enemy.

I havent played MTW 1 so i cant give you a comparison between the two but i can give you my advice nonetheless.I suggest you to wait until the expansion before making your purchase. MTW2 is a really fun game (potentially) but as it stands now its almost unplayable. Im almost positive that it will be a great game upon the completion of the expansion but for now save your money.

v1.2 definitely makes this game ready for release and very enjoyable. The mods makes it a possible classic. Can't go wrong with a collectors box if they're still out there.

it's good... if you use a Mod (i'm using DarthMod 'cos that seems to be the most popular).

I think M2TW is a big disappointment. Besides graphics, it it has not evolved from rome and is worse in some chases.

Besides the "woow, so many troops"-feel it has just flaws.
