Downloads section spam

I'm not exactly sure if this is a matter for the 'Parliamentum,' but yesterday I received a complaint from a modder about 'serfs' posting spam or unjustified negative comments in the downloads section. He told me that many of the more problematic posts came from members that had far fewer than 20 posts. He suggested raising the post number required to leave comments or ratings to help prevent such actions in the future.

As such I think that a reasonable solution would be to have the same requirements for voting in polls as for posting comments and ratings in the downloads section. Once again not sure if this was a matter for the Parliamentum, but it was a valid complaint that a member had and I felt that I had to bring it to your attention.

That is exactly what I was hoping for, almost the same wording that he used as well. So I guess I will simply take what you posted...I mean I will give due credit to you tBP for having worded and set the parameters for this proposal.

I haven't heard about this problem, but don't doubt it's happening. Actually I would bump the count up to 50 just to be sure, but if you think 20 is enough, that's good enough for me.

BTW: Where you provided with a link to a download that contained such negative comments?

This is true I have also come across negative comments in the downloads section.

balancing issue tbh... many people coming here to download will be doing just that and may not have any posts at all. this proposal could well limit the number of positive comments received.

That is true then at what other way might we able to stop the negative comments I think that this is the only way.

While it may prevent some from posting positive comments if they have too low a post count, it may at the same time encourage these low post count members to post more in the forums to get access to the comments. I know that having the ability to vote in polls has encouraged members to post more in the forums.

As an example, in the Picture of the Week thread there are occasionally members asking why they can't vote, when they are told of the 50 posts requirement those members say "ok, I need x number of posts, be back to vote after". So it may balance itself out either way, I am also flexible on the number of posts required. 25 perhaps?

It really does not take long for a determined member to reach that post count, even 50. While they are spamming as fast as they can they may realize, hey this is a pretty good site. Good threads in the forums, all the TW resources anyone could ask for, good members and...Why am I selling the site to you? You guys are already members of note.

I am mistaken, in fact; 50 posts is easy for someone in the TD, but in the TW sections and VV I suspect it is rather harder; on the former I speak from personal experience, on the latter from the things others have said.

I disagree, 50 posts is easy for someone who posts 1 liners in any section, overall 50 one liners are quite attainable in a day, however, 50 well thought and contributing posts are not.

I think the threshold should be raised to 100, mainly becaue few people are sad enough to reach that much posts for the sole purpose of spam comments.

point is, who's going to be bothered to make 20 posts just so they can give neg comments to a download they dislike...

Well I think that 100 may be more than is necessary, we don't want to discourage people completely after all. 50 posts is also the amount that is necessary to vote in community polls so I think that the 50 posts requirements is a good balance. I'll add the 1 week requirement. It seems like that would be the final piece that is needed to ensure that there are fewer people spamming the DL section with negative comments and such.

No not at all if memory serves me correctly i got over the 50 post mark in about 2 days.

SO I believe this preposition is the only way to stop the negative posts.

I want to let you know that the TWC Staff are fully aware of the bashing modders issue and we are doing our best to check the download section on a regular basis, dealing with all insulting comments as we see fit. I like your idea and I fully support it. It will not stop the bashing completely but it will help lower it, to what extent, I don't know.

I understand that it is a situation that you and others are monitoring, as you said the hope of this bill is to lessen those incidents. The modder who complained was pretty annoyed with some of the comments he and others received, that was why I told him I would bring this issue up here. So thanks for your support, I will add you as Patrician support.
