Default A tunnel between the U.S and Russia

    Greetings,

I don't think this quite qualifies as political, so I put it in the general discussion forum. What do you all think about this one? If it could happen, I think that would be pretty cool, you know to link the two continents. Well here's the article.

Yeah I saw the proposed entrances on Google Earth.

IMO it would just create more problems for the US and especially Canada with illegals streaming through like the Channel Tunnel. Once in Alaska, these people would have to travel into Canada to either pass through (or stay).

But hey, since when have politicians cared about national stability when their lobbyist mates are offering cash injections to political parties?

Please oh Please no ! So many engineering problems with building a tunnel under water as it is...let alone under water that kills within minutes of exposure. Stick with the boats people. There's hardly enough traffic between the two states at that point to merit a useless and expensive tunnel.

I've got an idea let's build a tunnel between Canada and Russia that goes underneath the North Pole. Then we can build one that goes from Mexico to Spain.
Thank you for reading this assuredly fantastic post.

I love these kind of ambitious projects. I hope it happens, although I doubt it will anytime soon.

I can agree with you here. It may not do much, but it would be one hell of an engineering feat. I think the article stated that it would take 2 years to put it together on paper and about 20 years to complete. Oh yeah.....and a whole lotta money.

That tops that 'Alaskan Bridge to Nowhere.'

For those who don't know, that bridge was a bridge built to this tiny island of a few hundred villagers and it cost tens of millions of dollars...

Oh come on guys! It would sure beat having to swim across the Atlantic Ocean like Google would have you do, instead now you could drive 12,570 miles (or 17,000 km) to get from Washington DC to London, passing through two of the most frigid places on Earth (in the summer) and seeing scenic gulogs that Russian political opponents were sent to! As well as getting chased by the occasional polar bear. Yay!

Seriously, that's like making a tunnel from the tip of Antarctica to an island next to the South pole (if one even exists); who would use it, and why? Of course people live in Alaska, and maybe a few whale poachers live in that part of Siberia, but, where's the motivation? Just so we can have another outlet to gaurd against illegal immigrants from both sides?

Wasn't there a guy that swam across the atlantic?

He was the greatest pool lapper olympian gold medalist of all time back in the 1920s.. I think he was polish.

Who the **** would want to use it anyways? I can't imagine a whole lot of traffic exists between Eastern Russia and Alaska at the moment anyways. I don't know why companies would switch from shipping to train/truck as it would significantly increase costs (water is by far the most efficient means of transport). And for time sensitive cargoes I would think air would still be preferred. This seems more like a lets build it because we can type of thing. I bet we could spend that $65 billion on hundreds of more useful tunnel projects.

This wont happen as long as were in Iraq unless they raise taxes or a 3rd party fund this entirely.

All out money is being taken out of domestic programs and put into the war. Even the FDA is not getting as much money which is party why we are non stop having food contamination problems. Do you think we can afford a tunnel like this? I'd hate to say this but Russia is more financially secure than us at the moment.

Why wouldn't they just use the 65 billion dollars for researching and developing flying cars? Then we wouldn't have these problems in the first place.

Mag-lev in vaccum tunnels strikes me as a more practical form of transport. As do passenger aircraft to individual ones. Undersea tunnels are another matter of course.

It seems like a silly idea to be honest, why would Americans and Canadians want to go to some remote eastern Russian wastelands?, when most can afford to fly to somewhere far more pleasant and interesting. Then you have the amount of money it would cost to dig the tunnel

what else is new? the government loves wasting our tax dollars on useless %^^&$% like abstinance programs, and the war on drugs, and bridges to nowhere...

And the war in Iraq, when our men could be put to better use defending the friggin' border.

or better yet, we could not defend the border at all and we'd probably be better off. Defending the border from what? The 11 hijackers weren't illegal aliens. The problems at our southern border would all be solved if we reformed the drug policy in this country. Otherwise, illegal immigration is what this country was founded and based on so...no sense stopping that now, it'd be hypocritical.
