earth-like planet found! what happens if it is inhabited?

    Scientists find earth-like planet
European astronomers say it orbits in a ‘sweet spot’ zone where life could exist.

    [thanks to nihil for info]

so what happens if it is already inhabited by an intelligent species?!?!?!?!

    do ‘we’...

    1. if they are inferior - invade.
    2. if superior befriend them learn their tech then invade.

    3. learn all about them, integrate and get on really well... for ever [?]

    if 3 then.
    1. do we breed with them? [if not possible then with scientific advances make it possible]
    2. allow them to settle on earth? [perhaps in return for settling there]
when we find them they will know where to find us...
then let us hope they are not:
    1. more advanced.
    2. deeply religious.
    3. like us [can’t get along for love nor money etc]

in my humble opinion, more advanced aliens would be less of a threat to us than we to them. who knows what they could teach us!

It takes 500,000 years to get there. I think we don't have to worry about the above.
It has been surmised, that perhaps, my lord had become like a wild animal that had been kept too long. Perhaps, but whatever... freedom... so long an unremembered dream, was his.
The children of Doom...Doom's children. They told my lord the way to the mountain of power. They told him to throw down his sword and return to the earth...HA!! time enough for the earth in the grave.

What if they have light speed ships?

If they are inferior invading would be really slack. If they are, and are freindly, then we will become friends, and ask if we can settle with em there.
Even if they are friendly and more advanced. We could learn so much from them.

If they are hostile, then our hopes of winning the battle if they are inferior is very high. But, what if they are hundreds of years more technologically advanced than us? We will get PWNED.

    But then again,

If it isn't inhabited. We could try to get there, if it really takes that long, then everything is pretty much the same.

P.S. +REP for bringing my attention to it.

Well then they can break physics (as we understand it) and we are ****ed anyway, so there you go.

Breeding, that's the only thing which cannot work. Who says their biology is based on DNA? They may have a difference in aminoacidic stereoscopy (R instead of L), which doesn't change the chemical properties of the compounds, but makes them incompatible with us. They may have different DNA bases. Different proteic aminoacids. Differences in gene transcription.

    Sorry, not possible, never.

Not in natural circumstances, i.e. sexual reproduction, but what of applied genetics? Basically, what about growing simple organisms that contain both genes from one and genes from another? Or, most genes from one and only a few genes that code for a few different characteristics? Its already been done with bacteria and the production of, say, insulin.

If we were able to reach the planet, as it is indeed very far from here and basically impossible to reach with our current technology, I think our biggest concern would be microbes. Even if all that's living there is relatively basic life, our bodies would have absolutely no experience in dealing with it. I think its a very high probability that any alien planet with life would be completely lethal to humans, simply because of a complete lack of immunity. It'd make the Native American epidemics look like a nice afternoon in the park.

Well, this is, as Ummon said, based on whether the bacteria and viruses (or maybe new organisms that do not exist on earth) are based on something other than DNA.

we could find ways of making us immune to potential threats, we should remember that thier germs may not have the ability to attack us?

Why then, do they keep abducting our women for impregnation?

A good question. In that case it is people from our far away future though, who have lost the ability to reproduce...

Genetics cannot make up for the differences I elencated.

Let's say they have R-aminoacids. There are massive consequences in protein folding. The hybrid cells would die of self-inflicted damage.

They are all 'may's and 'what if's.

What if they do have the same DNA as us? Or, at least, the same bases?

The probability of compatible biology is very low, given that a series of possible differences might have arisen in our own biology if things had gone differently on our planet. Such an instance would be a strong evidence of a possible common origin and/or even creation.

Given a below-godly control of matter-energy, no cross-breeding with aliens. On the other hand, with godly control of matter-energy, why cross-breed with aliens?

We should colonize and make it a new earth after we learn of their tech.
Sadly there maybe, other alien planets that they populate which would trigger an war in space. But like he said its 500,000 away so now worries.
What would be cool is if we desing a shipthat can make that distance in about 2 weeks.

more advanced beings would probably be less likeley to even consider the idea of war! less advanced - not a problem.

Why? Perhaps (assuming they are like life on earth) they are advanced because of their wars.
