    Default Favorite Philosopher

You guessed it, this thread is about your favorite philosopher. Post your philosopher's name and why you like him/her!

Mine is obviously Karl Marx. I like Karl because he was a great thinker, the originator of communism, and he had the greater interest of humanity in his heart. He also is was one of my fellow Jews...

Zeno, since I'm a stoic. Strangely, I also do like Epicurus a bit too, even though their supposed to be opposing philosophies.

    Politically, Machiavelli.

    Otherwise, Kant, Hegel, and Schopenhauer.

I would also like to add that I really like Camus and the theory of existentialism.

Above all, J.C.F von Schiller and David Hume. Schiller, because he's my favorite humanist, and he wrote the damn Ode an die Freude. Hume, because his philosophies on rationalism and empiricism weighed greatly upon the development of the modern scientific method, by which you record and know what you can perceive and deduce through reason and empirical evidence.

    My runners-up in semi-chronological order:
Immanuel Kant, Frederick II of Prussia, Jean Rousseau, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon I of France, Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Friedrich Nietzsche, J.S Mills.

He also is was one of my fellow Jews...
No he wasn't. Karl Marx, along with Engels, was an atheist.

Kal Marx was born in Trier, Germany, in a family which has clearly jewish roots but the father already accepted baptism. Not marx but his father had a jewish name. Marx was already born as a lutheran. He was not a jew, as he was not speaking hebrew, nor taking part in jewish customs.
He married a prussian woman of noble family
Some people say he had a jewish prophet like personality but that's all.
In his culture and language he was german just as Friedrich Engels, his closest friend from Wuppertal.

There is no "Jewish descent", as there is no "Jewish race". What vestiges there were of the ancient Hebrew ethnic group were spread about and diluted into every other ethnicity during the Jewish Diaspora.
In any case, you're wrong about his name. According to wiki, his father, Heinrich Marx, was born Herschel Mordecai, but changed his name when he converted to Lutheranism in order to practice law. He himself was virtually agnostic. Karl Heinrich Marx, his son, was raised in a generally areligious household, and he developed into an atheist.
If anything, Marx was anti-Judaism, according to many of his own words.

I've already answered to this question in the ethos, but..

Socrates, just because he was cool. And Aristotle, Hobbes, Rousseau, Nietzsche.
