A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R.R. Martin. There are still three books to be released.
Most brilliant series I've read (well, I'm still busy reading them).

You could also try the books of David Gemmell, some of his best series include: the Drenai Saga, John Shannow trilogy, the Rigante series, Stones of Power cycle.

it was called bartimaeus in english

The Song of Fire and Ice by George RR Martin (mentioned) and
The Prince of Nothing series by R Scott Bakker
    (heavy, deep perception changing philosopy)

a little homoerotic - Storm Constantine Wraethu series

For space opera - planetary sci-fi

Alastair Reynolds (Chasm city is probably my favorite) and Neal Asher (The Skinner is very good)

More political philosophy oriented sci-fi Ken Macleod (might be the wrong name)

Character oriented adult fantasy of a new bent -- Sarah Monette (Melusine, Virtu, Mirador)

    And how could i forget

The Malazan series by Steven R Erickson rivals Song of Fire and Ice and The Prince of Nothing
    and yes

All of Dune, even the new crap - skip book 7 - read the fan fiction for book 7 instead - it is much better

My Favourite Fantasy books were The Gor series. I know they are seen as Fantasy 101 and totally uncool and Un PC but for a puberty struck ,full of hormone teenager you couldn't get any better. He done about 30 books.

Also liked Adventure books like the fighting fantasy (they were game books) they were better stories than games

gor is actually hugely popular amongst hard core sf fans - they are some of the most expensive and hardest books to find in the genre

also Ursula Le Guin (mentioned earlier) is great for both Sci-fi and Fantasy - The Dispossessed is one of her most famous sci fi novels - a key book in the development of the subgenre

Even though its kind of historical romance of the three kindoms might interest you as it has all the qualities that you seek.
Then theres the Dune series, very good.

If you havn't read dune and you like "space opera" then you wont be complete until you finish.

Enders Game, which i read recently, was very good and a classic.

I can't really recommend more until you read Dune though. That is the beginning and the end of all great science fiction.

The four books of the Ender's series (the 3 follow ups really should be thought of separately than book 1) are classics, I personally like the 4 books of the Hegemon series (the prequel - sequel to the ender series), which chronicles the establishment of the earth government that later rules the stars, following the life of the Military genius Bean (ender's shadow...) and Ender's political dynamo older brother Peter.

All eight books are worth reading, the first series being more philosophic and the second a better story more connected with our current history (no aliens or real space opera)

What I like about dune and rotk is that in many ways, with the politics and intrugue and all of that, it is like they could of made three kingdoms into a dune-style sci-fi. Which is why I recommend it for him.

Hey I can recommend some fantasy good for light reading.

The Lost Years of Merlin by T.A. Barron

Lots of books in the series and its comparable to LOTR's only dealing with the myth of Merlin, only when he was a boy and not yet a powerful wizard.
