probs not in the right area, feel free to move it if so

    Chapter One

It was the height of summer, with a brilliant blue sky and a slight cooling breeze, and the HMS Indomitable was chasing a small bark off the coast of Arcatrias.
The ship was powering through the dark waters with almost divine speed, cutting each wave in half with her mighty prow, the solid pine of her homeland weathering the unforgiving tides with ease. High above her mainsail billowed strongly, odd for such a light breeze, the green and gold flag fluttering proudly above it. At the stern the ship’s name was stencilled in a no-nonsense sort of way in large black letters, and many others ships had learnt to take it very literally. This ship really did seem indomitable.
The crew were working the sails and the wheel furiously, dodging the various shoals of cod that dwelt in this shallow area of the Nocturnal Sea, but more importantly the huge rocks that jutted out of the water, some still sporting rotting planks of wood as souvenirs form their other victims.
Below deck, in the galley and gun decks, the crew were feverishly pushing cannons into place, stacking up ammunition and readying bandages and hacksaws for amputation. Some of the sailors argued this was a pessimistic approach; if they didn’t prepare them then they probably wouldn’t get hurt. The Captain said yes, he agreed with this, but it always paid to be prepared, whether you were protected by fate or not.
The Captain himself stood upon the stern deck, his manservant Parksley standing by with a telescope and a rifle. Parksley had come to the ship as a nervous apprentice gunner, but after demonstrating how he was the only boy able to make a cannon hit his own ship, he was soon put in a safer line of work. Now the Captain could hardly live without him, and more to the point, they were good friends.
‘Will you be making the warning shot, sir?’ inquired Parksley, indicating the rifle. ‘We’re not far now.’ The Captain noted that indeed, the bark they were chasing had grown larger, and he could see panicked figures running to and fro across its deck. After all these years of sailing, he still felt a pang of immature joy at a good chase.
‘No, Mr. Parksley, no warning shot. They made no warning when they attacked the Equator in her berth,’ stated the Captain. ‘And I want the Captain alive, so I can personally hang him from the mainsail.’
‘And what of any survivors? Or prisoners?’
‘Absorb them into the crew, no more than three to each unit to prevent a mutiny. If there’s more than three per unit…kill them.’
That’s what Parksley liked about the Captain. Always thinking ahead, ready for what’ll happen next. ‘Very good, sir. I’ll inform Lieutenant Cobb.’
The Captain nodded and gestured for his servant to leave the telescope. Bowing as he left, Parksley hurried to the under decks where Lieutenant Cobb would no doubt be, whipping his boarding party into shape.
The Captain of the HMS Indomitable was relatively tall, about six feet, give or take an inch, with thick black hair that fell to his shoulders. He had no facial hair and shaved regularly, but on this particular day he had skipped luxuries for duties and had some stubble coming. His clothes were the most unusual thing about him; black trousers and a white shirt, with shiny black shoes and a black tailcoat. At his neck flowed a red cravat, but on his head he wore the traditional three-pointed hat of a Captain proudly. Most other captains had laughed when he had been promoted on the Indomitable and taken to wearing these strange clothes, instead of the green and gold worn by most in honour of the King – well, they had laughed right up until he had captured or sunk their ships.
Now he controlled the most powerful ship in the Riverside Armada, as well as a small patrol of more modest ships for his own personal benefit. The Captain, overall, was commander of over one thousand men, seven ships, twenty-eight lesser officers and held a seat at the Council of Riverside Province. He reckoned life was going pretty well for him.
He was awoken from his daydreams (very unprofessional, he scolded himself) by Lieutenant Cobb barking a greeting from below, saluting smartly and ascending the battered wooden steps of the Indomitable. He turned to his second-in-command and walked briskly around the balustrade, leading the grizzled old commander to the map table. Strewn across it were various charts of Riverside Province and the surrounding isles, and also a sketch drawing of the Indomitable herself, every deck labelled and annotated skilfully by the resident cartographer, Mr. Simmons.
‘Status, Mr. Cobb?’ asked the Captain confidently. He had already pre-empted the answer.
‘All ready, Cap’n; I left young Johnson and Hobbs pushing the nine cannon into place down at the prow but I reckon it’ll be done by now…’
‘Good,’ interrupted the Captain heartily. He slid his long rapier out of its sheath at his side, relishing the divine glow that blinded him as the noonday sun blazed off of the polished blade. His eyes ran over the notches and nicks along its edge, all proof of the Captain’s many victories out at sea. He closed his eyes and breathed in the salty sea air, letting it wash into his throat and cleanse it; purify it. He opened them and looked directly at Lieutenant Cobb, straightening his hat as he did so.
‘Mr. Cobb, you know the drill. Give the order to fire.’
Lieutenant Cobb was all to eager to obey.
