Default What's your typical army look like...

Was sorta curious what kind of armies you like running around with. Guess what I'm saying is, once you get your empire on its feet as it were, what's your typical full stack look like? Doesn't matter whether your Rome, a Hellenized faction, Barbarian, etc..., or whether it's a historical make up or not ...just what ya like to use.
In my campaign at the moment, I'm Rome. I'm getting to the point where I am replacing my Hastati/Principes/Triarrii/Equites style legions with the VE Republican versions.
This is my standard "Legion" ...

    1 General
    1 Legionary 1st Cohort
    10 Legionary Cohorts
    4 Medium Cavalry Wings
    2 Onagers
    2 Roman Archers

So feel free to critique, or share your own ideal full stack

Oh, and just for your reading pleasure...I just got done fighting a battle vs. the Germans, and 30 seconds into the fight, the first thing my onager battery did was a short shot slice and killed my own general...lol

Edit : Tweaked my army somewhat, subtracted a unit of cav for another archer...just one didn't do the trick for my thoughts of having an artillery line.

My ideal legions are more infantry based. When I play as the Romans, I use one first cohort, one general, and all the rest legions. I do this when fighting the greeks, macedon, carthage, gauls and other greeks because I'm mostly fighting infantry and my infantry own everyone elses'.
But in the east, I'll throw in cavalry and some archers, because of the different armies i'll be facing.

    Hi i have
General or sometimes a different unit.
    1 leg. cohort
    12 cohorts
2 archers pepper the comeing infa.
2 roman pelts. for cav. or large runniing targets
2 infa with spears ( for cav. or to hold a line.

sometimes its also a Onager one or two depends the enemy iam faceing.
I usely use cav. or lite infa for my 2nd stack in the A1.
So when icome to battle i have a close full legion of 4500 men.
    or cav.

sometimes i will have a full legion of just horse archers or spear throwers just to weaken their units. Withdraw after then come back with my main force.
Remeber this is top secret!! And very heavy formation please dont tell the ememy!!

I never made it too the Marian reforms Just not enough time to play!

    My pre-marian legion:

    1 General
    3 Equites
    4 Velites
    4 Hastati
    4 Principes
    4 Triarii

I thought that was just about the most historical I could

    I use
    1 general
    1 first cohort
    15 legionary cohorts
    2 cohorts of cavalry
1 unit of archers (though i usually dont use them)

i like to have onagers with my army, but i also find that they slow them down to much.

Yeah, onagers do slow ya down, but I try to have generals with a quartermaster, or some such ancillary to improve movement a bit. Plus there just fun to watch...hehe.

    2x generals
    12x cohorts
    1x 1st cohort
2x onagers (unless defending, then I have two open slots for mercenaries)
    3x archers

I've stuck with this for my newest Roman campaign (where I actually play by the house rules!) on H/H and have conquered France, Spain and Portugal so far, and I'm slowly taking over Germany with 3 legions leading the attack, armed with advanced onagers and slowly making it to the capital. The Greeks are also being held by both my legions in Mediolandum and Patavium and the many forts I set up.

My standard legion is more based upon Cavalry to win the battle instead of Legionaries (I know it's not historical, but that's how I play)

    Standard Post Marian Legion:
    x1 General
x6 Legionary Cavalry (or Cataphract Archers if I'm in the East)
    x1 Legionary First Cohort
    x8 Legionary Cohorts
    x4 Archer Auxilia

I have a "auxilia" Legion of sorts also, been dying to use them...but they are standing watch on the Gatae frontier. They haven't fought a single battle yet, but they sure look cool. I allied with the Gatae as I finished off Macedon, sending my Roman Legions east (damn those large stacks of "Free Peoples"...and the Free Peoples Armies are vicious in the East, they are a mix of Greek and Eastern/Western Barbarian) and north...so I needed a safeguard on the Macedonian frontier. Over the course of the campaign, I have been adding troops to a spare Roman General and have this "mercenary" Legion ready for action (but unblooded).

    1 General
    3 Mercenary Hoplites
    2 Thracian Mercenaries
    6 Cimmerian Armoured Swordsmen
    2 Cretan Archers
    3 Barbarian Cavalry
    1 Sarmatian (sp?) Mercenary Cavalry
    2 Onagers

As you can see, It's essentially a Roman Legion but all merc troops...I think I may move them north to Germania as the Gatae are busy fending off multiple "Free Peoples" attacks...including multi-prong assaults on 2 gatae cities at once...Gatae holding there own...sorta...and it's keeping them from backstabbing me .
