Default Questions about Christianity/my views on religions

    To Christians:

I often see a statue of Jesus in churches, of course not all do.

Isn't that a kind of 'idolatry'? Making a image of a prophet, to some christians or God, to others?

    My views on religions:

I think religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam)in their 'purest' forms are actually good, but we humans had corrupted too much.

I had seen religious people agruing with 'atheists'/non-believers about many topics. Examples: Is homosexuality a sin?, Is Abortion right or wrong?, Which book is right?, Is Christian God, the same God as Muslims?

And these religious people often quotes phrases after phrases from the books. And some of them made this statement: You must read the Bible from front to back to understand it completely.

BUT if God created the books, what made them think they can easily understand the words of a superior being by just looking at the books from the first page to the last page?

So I view the books as works of man, nothing more.

To end it, I wish to ask this question:Is it possible to 'create' a secular world?

It is hypothetically possible, but there'll always be a religious population backed-up by nutcases who won't let it happen - in short, it might be possible, but only by "religious cleansing."

    That's my opinion...

You technically can look at any book, religious or otherwise for a hundred years without understand anything unless you read them.

Eventhough it might be possible I'm not sure what's good it will do to us human or humankind though. Will wars stop ? Well, wars in the name of God will surely do not exist though but other wars will still exist, either in the name of money, oil, territory, race .. you name it.

Will crime cease to exist ? I doubt so. Crimes are usually never associated with religion anyway but differences in social class for example.

Will women always stay second class to men, I believe it'll always be. Will women still be abuse by men if there's no more religion ? I believe it will be. We have wife beaters in religious Afghan the same as an Atheist American husband.

    LestaT,

I agree. I think the only thing which would change is the unjust laws against innocent people (homosexuals). It would certainly stop some Biggotry, but more would probably replace it. People will always kill eachother, no matter if religion exists.

This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action. It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.

It was simply the first example I could think of. I am sure people will always be afraid of what is different.

Indeed. Men will be good or bad entirely on their own conscience. Religion, moral code, rule of law are only tools to help dicipline men. In the end it's up to men themselves. Well men and women of course.

It's kinda funny how supposed idolaters, and idolaters-bashing types alike, are so focused on images!

I agree. I think it has something to do with the pride of a worshiper and his desire for everyone to recognize his faith.

You can't see that in Orthodox churches. This is in Roman Catholic churches.

Statues of Christ? I think not. We have crucifixes to better focus our worship. It is easier to pray to something you can see, and the crucifixes remind us of Christ's salvation. Seeing is believing, and a picture is worth a thousand words. Thus, the crucifixes allow us to understand His sacrifice better than just reading the words in the Book, which we also do.

Idolatry is worshipping an image, not using an image as a focus point for worshipping a transcendent being.

Jesus was not only a prophet, he was God.
The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be used until they try and take it away.

And in Orthodox Churches concept is completely different. We show in icons and frescoes Christ in his beauty, not pain, which is for me better.

Catholics church I remember. One of difference between Catholics and Protestant is image worship. One of reforms Protestant proposed during the early day was abandon image worship, since God has no physical form.

So, when you see a church with a Jesus status + cross, that is Catholics.
