    Default SPQR House Rules Question(Questions)

Concerning the house rules, I have a couple of questions:

    1. Why the 20 turn rule for re-training legions? It seems that if you use red legion shield cities only to train legions, then that seems like a sufficient penalty, especially if your legions are far from Italy. With my campaign, it will take a minimum of 5-6 turns just to re-train depleted units, not counting travel time.

    2. I understand the bridge/river fighting rule, but how about fighting a bridge/river battle if you are outnumbered by at least 2:1. That at least evens the oddds out. I love to fight river battles when I am heavily outnumbered - it gives the battle a sort of excitement, because even with the benefit of fighting across a bridge or ford, you very well might still lose.

this is to reflect the fact that Legions weren't retrained right away after losses, but after a period in time (in this case it's 5 years)

even if you r outnumbered 10 to 1 the amount of enemies that can fit in the bridge will still be the same, and thus the same number of enemies your infantry will meet at the other end. the AI will be at an unfair disadvantage since they wont be able to maneuver and go for the flanks.

Yep. I must admit, in a pinch, I'll defend at a bridge if no help is anywhere near by, and I'll grind 'em into the dust while I'm at it too, especially early on when my only missile troops are slingers. I know, I know, I'll repent at church this Sunday!

hehehehehe..... At least you feel as guilty as do. I'm starting a new campaign on 6.3 and im planning to adhere to the house rules this time, except for the blitzing rule, coz I'm planning on campaigning as as Rome historically did.

Problem is the AI doesnt work well with blitzing. Doesnt mean you cant take provinces but if you Rush or Blitz atleast Play with the Garrison script, then you can blitz all your want! ;-)

Its true, you will be slowed down incredibly. The main problem is supply lines. When invading a region that has no paved roads, it is terribly slow to get reinforcements to the front, or to replace your beat up legions. That is why my Iberian campaign took 20 years (80 turns) to finish. 9 legions went in at the beginning, but that was not enough in itself to take it all. I took half of spain and then was in stalemate as I couldnt advance with the six weak legions I had. I was forced to bring more from Rome which takes a lot of time. I can't imagine how slow it will be when I am off past the black sea..

What exactly is blitzing? is it simply pumping out alot of troops to simply overwhelm an opponent? Attack with one army, let it get chewed up and recruit another, etc, etc?

Blitzing is expanding your borders very early on in the campaign. People consider it unfair coz it doesnt give the AI the opportunity to react, but as Garnier says, there r also problems for the player. My 6.2 campaign came to an end after i expanded too quickly, to the point where my legions weren't enough to defend my large borders, and i was pretty much bankrupt. The last drop were the rebellions that took place in Spain and Carthage.

After that the rumor came up that a 6.3 was coming out

Without the houserules it is very very easy to win quickly. The houserules are what make the game the challenge it is supposed to be. Without them its not a whole lot different than most mods.

And its also easy to blitz early in the game, but as you get farther and farther from rome it becomes very hard. Your forces get thinner, the enemy armies get more numerous, and you are eventually broken down and you lose the hard earned territory. Blitzing in M2TW though, is completely the way to win cause you can get huge amounts of money through sacking cities, enough that you dont need an economy. Its just stupid.

As for bridge battles, when I must fight them I deploy my legion forces the furthest away from the bridge and as close as to the map border red line. This gives the AI pretty much space to move many of its units across the bridge before engaging. Althought not perfect it makes bridge battles more fun and casualties higher for my troops. I also feel that I'm not entirely cheating the AI and therefore no need to visit the church so often ;-)

for me i play with moderation, i dont blitz, i used to do that when i was a rtw noob, like lt1956 said i would also cheat and l would quit playing half way through the campaign... trust me the best way to play rtw is slowly and to role play like lt1956's house rules, ( i just dont take 20 years to rebuild legions though ) , that way the campaign will be challenging and will hook your attention longer i, usauly conquer an area with my legions ( like 2-4 settlements ) then i spend some time assimulating them to proper roman culture, then i either conquer other areas around it or put a legion there for protection

I plan on releasing a BI.exe version of SPQR 6.3
cant wait to horde as the germans and go beserk on the guals and romans
