    Default Vista Problems

I am trying to get the mod working with Vista and I'm having nothing but trouble.

    Install RTW
    Patch 1.3
    Patch 1.5
Load game to make sure everything is working fine.
Install BIG file under 'Admin' rights. (Compatibility Mode XP/SP2)
Install patch 8 under 'Admin' rights. (Compatibility Mode XP/SP2)

At this point it appears that everything is working fine, no errors or anything with the install.

I load New_UI.bat under Compatibility Mode also, Press any key, A for All files, Any key, A for all files. Window closes after extraction, once again no errors or failures.

I try to load the game and after the main splash screen the game crashes.

I found these instructions in another post, however I do not have the 'Data' folder specified, I only have the 'Data_RS' folder. Any help would be greatly appreciated if anyone else has managed to get this mod working with Vista.

    1. Go to (rtw)\data\paks\UI_1_pak
    2. In that folder you should see 'data' and 'data_rs' folders. If you do, you're in luck. (and a little text file in there too)
    3. Go into (rtw)\data\paks\UI_1_pak\DATA.........there should be a 'UI' folder.
    4. Take that folder and move or copy it to (rtw)\data\ (It should be in between 'tgas' and 'vegetation').
    5. Copy the contents of '(rtw)\data\paks\UI_1_pak\Data_RS\UI' INTO
'(rtw)\data\UI' folder. (Some stuff should be over written)
    6. Now go into the (RTW)\data\packs folder and rename UI_1.pak to UI_1.old.
    7. Start Game.

First of all, you must run 'NEW_UI.bat' for a fisrt install. But with the wonderful world of nothing but trouble 'Vista' (may it rot in software hades!), this won't work. I'll work on something for you poor people with Vista...give me a bit.

Mine works fine on vista. So far I havent had troubles with any mods or anything. I definitely didnt have to change compatibility modes or anything like that for rtw. That sucks though I hope you fix it.

It sounds to me like the people having trouble with this don't have 'administrator' rights on their machines in Vista. By default, Vista doesn't give them to you.

I just did a fresh install of Vista Ultimate 32-Bit. My account is the only account made, and also under the User Account settings, it's listed as Administrator account instead of Standard.

I have the exact same setup, 32bit vista ult. 1 user, and administrator. The only thing I could think of is turning user account control off (I did this just because its very annoying), but it may conflict with the game?

The only other thing I can think of is that I included a file called 'xcopy.exe' in the installer because of a potential 'path' problem in XP. There are times when the path gets corrupt in XP, and people don't even know it, but the two batch files 'NEW_UI.bat' and 'UI.bat' have to be able to find 'xcopy.exe' in order to work. By putting it in the installer, I got around this problem.

However, if you run this is Vista, it could be that the batch files see the 'xcopy.exe' that's in the RTW folder first...which of course, is the wrong version for Vista OS.

Do a search on your PC for 'xcopy.exe' if you have Vista, and delete any instance you find of it in an RTW game folder. Just a thought.

I'm curious about one thing...does 'NEW_UI.BAT' run without errors. If it doesn't, it's a problem, because that batch file MUST run and do it's job properly, or the game will CTD instantly.

I have a way to solve this if it's the batch file that's not working right, but keep posting Vista issues in here so we can hopefully get them worked out.

Also, post what you did to solve you're problem. I will stick this thread and other players Vista can benefit as well.

I install the game fine I think, just dont have unit cards like you said and then I get a CTD when I try to exit the game. When I run the batch file I guess it runs ok. But then when I go back in game I get the same problem as earlier. I know when I've tried to mod my rtw files you have to make a new file and delete the old one. I think its something with the batch file. I have a vanilla copy installed right now if you want me to try anything. I tried to the stuff at the bottom of the very first post but that just got me an immediate CTD. Don't know if this helps much, but this is the issue im having.

I'm going to see if I can come up with another 'solution' for Vista. Problem is, I don't have it, or access to it. So I'll need somebody to test when I do. I don't think the batch file is running right in Vista...it's unpacking but not re-packing.
