    Default Mmo

Ok, me and a few other people want to make an mmo and have no idea where to start or what we need to do. I know we need to make our own engine and we need more people to help with everything. If anyone know how and what needs to be done pplease post help and if u would like to help us make it please leave a message here. We want to make a
graeco-Roman style game, and wars between them.

Remember to take your time and check everything over and over again if you mess up be sure to backup.
This takes a lot of time to do so be patient.

If you come out with a finished product that would be quite amazing.
Firstly as Saiah said, design it, using pen and paper. This is the most fun part, you can draw a map, characters, write a backround story, design weapons, point systems, features and how the game will work.

But I have no clue as to how to actually make the game either. Research buddy. A lot of it. You will have to learn skills in computer programming etc.

It will be a big feat. Good luck.

well, I'm no coder myself, but the following is about what I imagine you would need in order to "make" your own engine, you'll need to learn programming code, probably more than one... or write your own (which would first require learning other programing codes). To do this, you could either A. lurk the internet endlessly for tutorials, guides, and help while learning it yourself at home, or B. sign up at a university near you for the fall semester (hurry, the deadlines are probably now) in a programing/math program. In 4 to 5 years you should be pretty close to where you need to be (though by then half of what you've learned will be obsolete)... Then with a good team of other very skilled programmers, you'll be on you way to writing a game engine.

The other option would be to use an existing one... either one that's free (very limited, 'doubt any of them could support an mmo), or buy one, which shouldn't cost more than several thousand dollars...

While some of you are doing that, some more should start learning 3D and 2D graphic design, which would consist of about the same sort of path as the one described above, but (obviously) in a different field of study.

and who ever is left, should start researching the time period and start coming up with different game/art concepts.

and as mentioned, don't worry about making anything digital for a while, as by the time you'll be ready to actually model/animate/program EVERYTHING, we will all have bought new rigs with dx11 -dx15 cards and etc.

In addition, if your game focuses on PVP, make sure it focuses on that gamestyle 75% and 25% should be the PVE stuff and vice-versa.

Also, try to be a little bit original. What I mean is add new material and try to research other gamestyles and try to make it better.

I think you are getting into something you will regret.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but to make a game like this you need years of experience in programming, probably c++. You need to learn various APIs, get many programs (which can be expensive) and multiplayer...well thats a whole nother level of design and is complicated for advanced programmers.

I mean....anything it possible if you put your mind to it, but if you have absolutely no experience with anything...maybe you should start out small. Purchase or download a free c++ compiler, learn how to program, learn the Win32 API, maybe GDI for graphics, then try a small game like pong.

Its no walk in the park. I am currently programming a 2D Space Invaders in c++. So far I have 5000 lines of code for the engine and I'm not nearly finished.

There is an absolutely amazing language called DarkBasic Professional. It is extremely easy to use and is very powerful. In my opinion, it is the best way for novice, even experienced, game programmers to start.

    Good luck!

Back in the day, not on Wednesday, I used to own a game design company, Hypernet Studios, you may heard of it, or not... Anywho, we were starting an MMO, and got really far, we were actually into getting voice acting done, and finishing scripts for quest and such.

Sadly, a few members left because they just got bored, thats the only reason they gave. Unfortunately the members that left were very important coders and texture artist. Work slowed, and eventually failed. We broke up and my dreams of a good MMO failed.

Good luck btw imfrgt10, I hope you atleast didn't give up, but maybe after we get our mod done, you can talk to me about starting up a game again. I have the funds and contacts, and I am well known in certain circles.

The first thing I believe to make a game is designing it. Design how your game works first before doing the programming itself. You will also need a lot of people to make the characters, levels, skills, and all the good stuff.

    Good Luck in your project!!

I've taken programming classes to. And I've worked with visual basic. And I've seen the code for a programmers 3D rendering engine he's working on. BIG DIFFERENCE.

Help you understand it? Just look at the GarageGames website, who developed the Torque engines. I've used the 2D engine before. Their 3D engine is relatively low priced as well, and can be used commercially. Yes they can be used on windows.

    These are torque games:

Seriously, if you want to make a game don't start with an MMO. If you and your friends want to make a game, either start with a MUD or start with a full conversion mod of something with a big mod community and flexible engine like Unreal 2.5. You can't start with an MMO. You will never get anywhere without a few years of trial and failure.

I agree with the above poster. I recommend starting something simple for a while just to get the mood of starting a game or something like a platformer or action game.
