I thought it would be interesting to see the different ways all of you are playing the Templars and what kind of luck you are having.
For myself, I found that playing them on VH/VH without tweaking any of SS 3.0's files was nearing impossible. I consider myself a good player, but without a decent economy and army, I was overrun by the Egyptians within the first 40 turns. I had an alliance with them, but they broke it, even though our relations were at Very Good. The surrounding rebel cities were too strong to take without building up some troops first. My economy went into the red. My fate was sealed.
After that experience, I tweaked my game this way:
I set the timescale to 1.5 years per turn.
I added Ultimate AI 1.3.
I gave the Templars an extra 1,000 florins to start with.
I set campaign difficulty to Hard (battles still at VH).
So far, so good. The game is still a challenge but not overwhelming. I'm about 50 turns in and control Tortosa, Adana, Damascus, Antioch and Aleppo. The Egyptians have again attacked me, but I have one fairly good army and a decent economy. The stage is set for some real fun, now.
