    Default Erasing the Past...

    Hello all. I'll put a disclaimer here and say if you really want to watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, don't read this spoiler, or maybe the topic! That said,

    Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    In ESOTSM, it turns out a couple whose relationship ended badly had their memories erased. Then after having lost all knowledge of each other, they meet again, fall in love...and eventually realize their past.

    Now, would you want to erase part of your memory? Perhaps a terrible event, perhaps a bad relationship? Is it ethical to offer this practice (were it possible)?

    And if you erased the memory of someone you onve loved, and met them again, then found out who they were, would you want to keep going with the relationship? Is the pain from a lost relationship really bad enough to warrant the erasure of memory?

    Cheers guys, I've been thinking hard on this for a while now...one of the reasons I'm missing class!

    I already do! Ever heard of drinking excessively? Every Friday I erase my memories of the past week (and usually post something very silly on here)

    This conversation seems vaguely familiar.

    I don't have any excessive bad memories enough to go to that point, I'd say... but if I had I could erase them, depends on what they're about actually.

    I'm guessing you watched it on Sky Movies a few nights back? So did I.

    I can't categorize my memories as bad, I see them just as memories, no matter how bad they felt at the time they were made.

    I don't think memories should be erased, no matter how bad they are. Our past is a part of who we are and we can all learn from our past. The past has happened and it will always be there, one should try and deal with it rather than escape from it.

    Bad memories are there for a reason. They help us learn from past acts/actions and hopefully become better persons. To erase a bad memory would only condemn yourself to possibly repeat the same mistake over and over.
    Our memories help define us as Human beings. I want all my memories the Good and the Bad. Makes me a better person.
    I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I expect the same from them.

    I agree. The hardest breakup I've gone through was very trying on me, as tough breakups are. But I don't recall once wishing I could forget about the entire experience. Each relationship, each experience helps you to grow as a person, and to become the person you are today.

    I think you'd only be hurting your future if you erased memories.

    I don't know, maybe I'm too much of an optimist, but life is simply too good to erase parts of. Every time I look outside and I see the sun shining down, or the wind blowing leaves in circles....I am reminded of why I want to remember every moment.

    //end emotional outburst
