Just to see how cultured the TWC masses are.

NOTE:By Foreign I mean non-English, so your favourite non-English speaking film regardless of the nationality

    My Favourite Short film is
    Yu Ming is Anim Dom
My name is Yu Ming, it's about the ignorance of the irish language in Ireland as seen through the eyes of a chinese immigrant
(it's in Irish, but it's subtitled)

    My Favourite Foreign Film is
City of God (Cidade de Deus)
It's about the struggle of Rocket(english translation) to escape of the City of God, a favela in Rio de Janeiro during the 60's, 70's and 80's and how his escape is created by those who destroy his home. It's a film you must see.

I don't really watch any shorts.

My favorite foriegn film is Il Buono, il brutto, il cattivo. An epic race between three men that leads to the forever famous triangle of trust in a graveyard. The soundtrack is amazing. The actors perfect and the story intense. All for $200,000 in gold. I have the movie in its full version dubbed in English as well as in its original Italian.

Edit: Honorable mentions go to Cidade de Deus and Vozvrashcheniye.

Yeah, I know a lot of short films are...well ****, and most independent films only feature a bunch of gay cowboys eating pudding.

I agree on "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". My favorite of all times as well. Ordered an extended DVD a month ago.
Also, I'd recommend french or english movies (from 70's or 80's). No happy ends.
From the past decade, I'd say Amores Perros, Sexy Beast, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch and chinese Hero.

I never got the plot behind "Battle Royale" mainly because it is only shown at like 3am on the Sci-fi channel over here(and of course I am nice and alert at that time) and the ending was incredibly bizzare, the school teacher riddled, fecking riddled with bullets then 5 minutes late he gets up and walks to the sofa to die there, come on, be dead or don't be dead, its one of the two.

Never been a big fan of Mel Gibson as a director, he is an alright actor when the script is good though.

EDIT: I never really got wire-fu, it's ridiculous, people can not(no matte how hard they wish)fly, it doesn't really bother me if the characters are fictional, but if the personas of the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", in the film "Red Cliff" like "Guan Yu" can fly, I will be quite pissed off

And I agree on "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" as well too. It is my most favorite "western" movie of all time!
To those who have not seen it, try watching it sometime, its really good, and the soundtrack is great too.

"The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" is alright , but I think its that film maybe one of the others Clint westerns, but one scene always annoyed me, its the scene when he and someone else are trapped on a horse on a rope bridge and the camera using first person perspective pans around the feet of the protagonists but the horse is missing, where did it go?
(not the best description, I know but it has been a while since I have seen it)

Oh, the other Eastwood's westerns are mediocre (I'm talking about Sergio Leone movies), and that's me being generous.
"The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" had amazing combination of actors, who fit the caracters perfectly (gotta love Eli Wallach), script, music, camera and director, which the others lack.

Apocalypto doesn't really class as a 'foreign' film... it may not be in English but the movie is American.

My favourite classic foreign film is M (sort of cliche, but it's been one of my favourites for years) and more recently No Man's Land.

I've seen a lot of shorts before but I never recall their names, there's a lot that I've really enjoyed. Unless you include animated shorts from the 20s-40s, in which I can honestly name dozens that I love.

My favorite foreign film besides the Sergio Leone's Westerns and British films is probably Swept Away.

I like this movie because it shows what our environment does to us and how much society corrupts us and keeps us from true happiness.

I think I have seen "Swept Away" or more accuratly "Swept Away by an Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea of August" to use its full title, I thought it was a porn film when I first saw it, there is a LOT of sex in the film...but that's not a bad thing now is it.

Ah damnit, damnit! I have seen a American, Independent( I presume) shortfilm not to long ago, but I can't remember the title.

It was about a old man, getting a notce that his brother, which he had a bitter relationship with and hadn't had contact with for many years, was dying.

The man, having no other transportation than a lawnmower went up to see his brother who lived many states away from him.

Anyway I enjoyed the film, not the best foreign or independent film I have seen but it still hit a softspot.

Here is another short film I found

Its called "10 Minuta" or "10 Minutes" and its about ten minutes in the life of two people, a Japanese tourist in Rome and a young boy in Bosnia. Its good stuff!!

If you can't tell already its does not have a happy ending. Enjoy!!

There is some English, but the majority of the film is in Bosnian(I think)

The only foreign movies I've seen are British, so:

Layer Cake was pretty damn good, as was Green Street Hooligans. Snatch was also decent. But my vote goes the first two.

Snatch wasn't that good, cause Brad Pitt can do an Irish accent, and its was the same as Lock Stock which was much better
