Default You have ruined my ability to enjoy battles!

Yes you heard right, my ability to enjoy battles in any other mod or vanilla game is almost completely gone. After just one custom battle in SPQR I was sold. I was simply sucked in to the whole battle style atmosphere. The music choice is phenomenal, most of the models/unit skins are almost perfect especially the praetorians (I only dislike the Legionaries who wear metal plaids, only because they in my mind aren’t realistic) and the unit stats are perfectly well balanced, which means the battle lengths are not too short or too long, just simply perfect.

Unfortunately I dislike the campaign style and that prevents me from enjoying the mod. I know I can’t complain about that and I won’t because that’s all about personal preferences. I do wish that you would consider building a second mod or version of SPQR that could appeal to my kind of peoples liking though. The SPQR campaign style is all about huge battles, lots of competition from the start and so on. I would like to see the opposite and a more vanilla kind of campaign style, because I do like to start out slowly, fight huge and small battles, plus that when you loose a legion then it takes time to build one up again. I can’t possibly be the only one liking that, because RTR’s and Lusted’s TE campaign style is basically exactly like that.

So my humble request is, please build a new mod or version of SPQR and I will sacrifice a hundred strong bulls for you!

    I salute you!

yeah, this is a great mod. I've had A LOT of tough battles, this was how RTW was meant to be played.

Lt made the mod for his style of play.

I think what you are saying is bad is the quantity of battles? I mean, you do fight a LOT of battles in this game for sure. And I sort of agree that I could do with less battles, but its not possible for me to do (and would unbalance things) and I still like SPQR better than any other mods.

I don't how much work it would be to transfer let's say the campaign style in RTR or TE to SPQR battle style. Anyways maybe I should just give in for now and let my ass get whooped from the start!

One question though, is there a way I can make the praetorians playable in the campaign? If not where can I download version 6.1? (they should be playable in that version correct?)

Praetorians are available in the campaign but only in the city of Rome... Once you conquer it you can recruit them only in Rome and nowhere else

I also think that no other mod has perfected the battle system as SPQR has... I keep trying all other mods but I always come back to this Mod. I even get bored playing M2TW with mods

Imo the campaign mode is also good in SPQR and it is actually slow if u follow basic strategies and house rules

Yeah it is quite long and epic, the campaign is.

I'm still in spain, been here for 40 turns (205 BC to 195 BC) and only conquered half of it... It takes four years for my fastest general marcus aurelius to take the remnant of a legion back to its home city from spain, and then back to the frontline after refilling it. That is on a highway the whole route.. I can only imagine what its gonna be like when I get really far from Rome, like to the east of the black sea...

man i love SPQR because the campaigns are so damn challenging...it's what got me hooked on this mod...awesome, epic battles along with grueling, grinding campaigns that force you to actually PLAN AHEAD and THINK about what you're doing...unmatched by any other mod

rep me if you like my posts, and it's highly likely you'll get some back

yeah macedon is extremely tough, but hey, the barbarians (especially germans) are quite nasty in their own right...what difficulty do you play?

Go thru 'export_descr_units.txt', change 'unit cost 0' to 1.
All new game....but very unlike reality. You just didn't tell your enemy, "Hey wait a minute, I need to rest!" in the real world. The beauty of SPQR...hard reality.

Maybe so, but nor in reality you could magically raise huge armies in no time. I see what you mean, but again word would have spread in most cases that an invasion was likely and so on.

maybe so, but 6 months or 3 (if using the script) is hardly "no time"

yeah don't forget that one turn is not happening in real time...it takes you "no time" to click that "end turn" button but in-game that's 6 months or 3 months (depending on whether you're using garrison script or not)

I agree, these battles are great! This is the kind of gameplay I was expecting to get when I bought RTW. Definitely more challenging too. I played on medium battles and got my ass handed to me, now I play on easy and win but have a lot of Pyrrhic victories.

Although, the navy really sucks. I built a full fleet and got an army in it to send to Sicily to re-take Messana from Carthage. The fleet got annihilated by a pirate navy half its size. I had enough trouble controlling the seas in vanilla, now my problems are magnified x10.

I agree the high upkeep cost and recruiting cost of roman ships and their inability to kill anything less tame than a new born puppie reenders them frankly quite useless. Ialso wonder whether pirate armies only spawn near your armies cos they are always around my coasts.....

When i invade i just use a huge stack of ships and that is the only stack i have of them, once army is ashore i tend to kamikaze them lol so i dont have to keep paying upkeep costs cos money is tight in this mod

That's exactly what I did, but my navy (along with the army I had on the ships) got eliminated by a pirate navy half its size. That's seriously beyond lame and is my only major complaint about the mod. The rest of my complaints are minor things that really have more to do with me being new to the mod than anything else.

Mathsblaster have a look in the edu you will find that stat wise the roman navy( -editted) is DELIBERATELY underpowered so that roman expansion is slower because the risk is high at sea. Also roman ships have less men so other nations fleets will often destroy you even if smaller

and to my point about one full stack i forgot to mention that (although impossible?) it appears to "put the ai off" the idea of attacking a full stack navy with 5 pirate ship units (even though the pirate army would most likely destroy the full stack or at least most of it lol)

But i agree with LT that in almost every mod the expansion of any nation is fast and lt's playing style suggests that expansion should be slower and that rome historically gets marian reforms at 104BC and he tries to get AS CLOSE to that as IS POSSIBLE while the game is still fun to play and you still write the history books
