    Default Confusing Installation Problem

    Hi,
I am new to Rome: Total War. I recently bought Medieval 2, loved it, but always wanted to play in the Roman era. So, yesterday, I bought the Rome Total War Anthology, including Rome: Total war, and the two expansions all on seperate disks.

I wanted to play Rome: Total Realism, I had researched it and it appears to add exactly what I felt was missing. So, I proceeded to uninstall all Total War expansions, and the game.

Now, I installed Rome, and following instuctions, I installed patch 1.2. Next, I installed Realism 6.0 full, followed by the 6.2 patch as instructed. This did not work, it kept booting me to the desktop.

Then I realised, my version is probably up to date with patches already. So I downloaded RTR Platinum. Followed the instructions again, but now the shortcut does not work, nor does the game load. Instead it comes up with the browse... thing... with that flashlight.

My question is, does anybody know how to install RTR with the Anthology. RTW is on a seperate disk, so I think they problem may be that I am completely uneducated on the subject.

Anybody shed some light on how I can install it? Will my version (that I bought yesterday) be patched with 1.5. If so, how can I make it the vanilla 1.0 version. And does anybody know why the shortcut won't work?

Thanks. Really don't have a clue lol.

    Hello

    install rtw
check version on the options screen ( top left ) after you started the game
    quit
if you have 1.0 or 1.2 than patch up to 1.5 ( see official website )
if you have 1.5 or you have installed the right patches
install BI ( barbarian invasion )
patch up to 1.6 ( see official website )
make a copy of the entire rtw + bi folder ( copy / paste )( MAKE AN EXTRA COPY FOR FUTURE USE AND NAME THAT FOLDER BACKUP RTRPE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT SO THAT IF YOU WANT TO INSTALL ANOTHER MOD YOU DON'T HAVE TO REINSTALL)
name the new folder rtrpe1.8 for example
now you can ( if you want ) install alexander add-on in your original folder
and rtrpe 1.8 in the new rtrpe 1.8 folder

i suggest to use rtrpe ( platinum edition ) because you can play via the bi.exe (is fully automated = you don't have to make a shortcut by yourself) because the ai is slightly better

    hope this helps

    1. but better download rtrpe 1.8 mod switch version
    2. even better download extended realism mod 1.8 ( rtrpe 1.8 mod switch version included ) this is i think the best rtr mod.

Thanks, MacLiam! I agree, and I'm not biased at all!

Seriously, MacLiam's right. Play with the most heavily-patched version you can. You'll get a better gaming experience.

So I install PE, then ER mod, or just ER?

    edit:
Ok, I did everything you said. I installed the ER mod straight but it says browsing and cannot find RomeTW.exe or something. Anybody know what the problem is?

    edit_2:
Ok, I installed it, but when I start up Rome, it is the same normal game, no mod as far as I can tell. This is very frustrating since I do not know where the RomeTV.exe is or what to do to install the mod.

Perhaps I should leave the expansions and try it with only Rome?

You have to install ExRM ( only ExRM 1.8 / thus only the extended realism mod this includes rtrpe1.8 ) in the folder where you installed rtw + bi ( or your copy of rtw + bi ( which you probably renamed )

you probably have to browse ( don't follow the path the installer is defaulted to)

    so in short : install rtw ( 1.5 )
    than bi
    than patch 1.6
than ExRM 1.8 ( browse to the right path / folder)

    this must work

    ( do you have 3 separated cd's/dvd's ? )

I'm not english speaking ( so maybe there are some errors in the text )

Your English is great, I never would have second guessed it.

However, what I do not know is what exactly I am looking for when browsing. Both expansions are on SEPERATE disks and Rome is also on it's own disk. I install following your instructions to the letter, it asks me to browse for RomeTW.exe. I think it worked, but I cannot find (or know) RomeTW.exe. Where could I find it?

Anybody? Please because I really, really want to give RTR a go. It looks great

    Still no luck with installation.

Most probably the RTW.exe file must be on these locations:

    C:\Program files\Activision\Rome Total War

    or

    C:\Program files\The Creative Assembly\Rome Total War

If it's a fairly recent version the game may appear under c:\program files\sega.

If you are not sure the easiest way may be to search for 'rome' in the "program files" folder. Open the 'c' directory, use the right mouse button to click on the "program files" folder - select the search option. In the 'all or part of the file name' enter 'rome' and then search. This will bring up a list (including partial matches) of files so you should be able to find the 'Rome TW.exe' or the 'Rome TW-BI.exe' executables.

    Hope that helps.

No, I understand where the Rome files are, just not the specific .exe. I seem to have searched every file, I just can't see anything that relates.

    *lightbulb moment*

Perhaps a search for romeTW.exe specifically may find it... oh I just realised you said that lol, yeah.

    edit://
Ok I believe I have found it. I think I will make a copy of it this time and see if it works then, perhaps installing RTR somehow deleted it, I don't know. I'll post back later. Thanks again for all the help and support!

OMG it worked, and Rome Total Realism is a work of pure genius, well done to everybody and anybody involved, such an improvement!

Turned out I was too dense to notice that I installed RTR into the wrong directory. Figured it out. THANKS!!!

Good to hear that you can now play the game - you should have hours of enjoyment. The RTW based games do have their own problems.

Next time you may want to post in the rometotalrealism.net web pages - I'd post a link but the forums are temporarily down..... There are tech support teams in the main RTR thread and each mod (RTR PE is treated as a mod of RTR) is also supported.

Ah there is a forum for it? Ok sorry if this is in an ideal place. Really great work, especially love the new Spartan look; although I am surprised they do not have the Phalanxe formation.

Are there any other add-on's or mini mods I could add to make it better. Say, formation mods or something like that Music Mod, that will work with what I have.

Thanks again for all the support

Yes, there is a forum 'rometotalrealism.net' - http://www.totalrealism.net/ with the forums at http://forums.totalrealism.net/index...ums/index.php?

As posted previously the forum is down at the moment.

It depends upon the version you are playing RTR 6 Gold is the final version of the 'official' game - you can install the RTR 6.2 Music add-on (don't install RTR 6.2 though). RTR 6 Gold is the final version that runs using the RTW 1.2 engine.

The music add on can be sourced from the main web page and you don't need access to the forum. If you install that you need to rename the events.idx and events.dat in the data\sounds folder.

RTR Platinum (PE) is a community ported version of RTR 6 Gold to use either RTW 1.5 (?) or RTW BI 1.6. The latest version of this mod is available in this forum. There are a number of different mods for this version (landblocks have been added between Carthage and Ptolemaic and north of Bactria to encourage the AI to expand in different directions).

I am confused with the mod. Why are there no Julii, Brutii or Scipii? And the SPQR isn't there either.

I enjoy it either way, do not get me wrong, just wondering. However, you were right, difficulty is increased incredibly. I am playing as the Roman right now. I have so much going on, it is incredible. I tried playing as Egypt, the easy one apparantly, but way too many cities to keep up with lol.

Incredible mod, but wow at the difficulty!

For the time period involved the divisions of Rome were not realistic. However if you check out the first triumvirate mod, it features many rtr units, some of its own, and intricate senate politics. You can play as the Caesar, Pompey, Crassus, Vercingetorix, or the Parthians.
