Default The new place of religion in my life.

I'll be frank, I have no religion. I really have no need for it, I realize that it is amazingly comforting to many, but as of right now I can fully accept my situation without the need for a God.

That said, I have found a different use for God in my life, a literary element of sorts. Does anyone else find that the use of the word "God" in literature almost irreplaceable? If you were to ask me it denotes a person's character and how they view the world. Is it chaotic and all destroying or fateful and benevolent? Can any atheists or agnostics out there go a month without finding the need to reference a God in regular conversation? From "May God have mercy on your soul." to "Ask not whether God is on our side, ask if we are on God's side." it is irreplaceable, just as the "damn" in those famous last lines of Gone with the Wind "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

So even if God does not exist, I think that the concept is essential to expressing the human condition.

As a songwriter, I completely agree.

The use of God and Heaven draw amazing connotations in love songs, and when used ironically, it can be very mean.

This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action. It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.

I'll agree with that, and I'm an agnostic that leans heavily towards the atheistic side. I have a big 15-20 lb Medusa head above a archway in my house, sometimes I stop and give her a toast when I'm drinking wine. I dont believe in it obviously, but I like the idea of it. Yeah I know, I'm goin' a little looney in my old age. So it really doesnt matter if it's the concept of a christian god or any other deity in my opinion, I just enjoy the little ritual.

And watched the grisly pilgrims go that walk the roads of Death,
And I have seen black valleys gape, abysses in the gloom,
And I have fought the deathless Ape that guards the Doors of Doom."

The concept of God allows us to look out into the chaos of the unknown and bring about instant order by uttering a single word. Every human regardless of religious persuasions needs this ability.

An interesting point of view. As an atheist I'm trying to avoid using those phrases to an extent, but they seem to come so naturally. The environment has such an effect... I still use damn, though. Love that word.

Well, I am an agnostic also leaning heavily towards Atheism.. Sometimes, people who know that I have a doubt in religion and hear me say "God damnit", "God bless", "Jesus Christ!", often ask why I use these phrases when I'm not really religious. I mean, what's the problem? I celebrate Christmas just because It's fun, and I use these "religious" phrases for a similar reason, for expressing myself.

    They're just words!
