Default "My Sweet Lord": Chocolate Jesus angers christians

Apparently, consuming the lord can happen only in terms of bread and wine.
("My flesh is real food; My blood is true drink,";John, 6.)

A New York gallery has angered a US Catholic group with its decision to exhibit a milk chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ. The six-foot (1.8m) sculpture, entitled "My Sweet Lord", depicts Jesus Christ naked on the cross. Catholic League head Bill Donohue called it "one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever". The sculpture, by artist Cosimo Cavallaro, will be displayed from Monday at Manhattan's Lab Gallery. The Catholic League, which describes itself as the nation's largest Catholic civil rights organisation, also criticised the timing of the exhibition. "The fact that they chose Holy Week shows this is calculated, and the timing is deliberate," Mr Donohue said. He called for a boycott of the gallery and the hotel which houses it.
I would thought this is good religious marketing, everyone loves chocolate, but hey, what do I know?

“The cowards at the Roger Smith Hotel, who were brazen enough to tease their trash to selected media sources over the past few days, have shut down and are refusing to talk to the press. But the artist has decided to go his own way. He is now inviting everyone to eat his chocolate Jesus.

“The Roger Smith Hotel is morally bankrupt. It is the goal of the Catholic League to make it financially bankrupt as well. Being mailed out today are hundreds of letters, complete with the news release I wrote a few hours ago, calling for a boycott of the hotel. These organizations represent millions of Americans across religious lines, as well as those who belong to non-sectarian groups. All of them can be counted on to never hold a conference at the hotel. And more—they will let all of their allies know about this incident.

“The Roger Smith Hotel will rue the day it sought to declare war on Christian sensibilities.”

    Ha! I like it.

I also use to have (not lying either) a Pope wax figurine on a rope.

And apparently a peaceful religion is going to war with a hotel. Cool!

Thats creepy as hell, who gets to eat him?

Who gets to eat his genital region? Thats very very creepy, I have to say, I'm not even religious and I would have trouble eating that. A little too close to cannibalism.

They could have at least made a chocolate jesus in a more appealing pose, like Buddy Christ. But no they went the full on depressing route with the crucified jesus....not very appetizing.

Well, I think it's a bit disrespectfull to eat a Jesus effigy.

Communion is rarely done with the bread actually looking like Jesus Christ, nor is the wine poring from the breads veins or anything.

("My flesh is real food; My blood is true drink,";John, 6.)
AFAIK this is in reference to communion, not little chocolate statues, or butter jesus's or syrup coming from a Jesus shaped container.

How is it disrespectful, and to who?

How so? Not everyone respects Yeshua. Thus, it is not a universally disrespectful act to eat it.

I imagine it's disrespectfull to any christian. Well, if the eater is a non-christian it's a slap in the face.

Sort of like Flag burning. It's insulting, but it doesn't really mean anything.

I don't see how this could offend someone, they arent burning images of jesus, theyre just enjoying his milk chocolatey taste.

Appreciating Jesus is offensive now? Maybe consuming an image of Jesus is religious in nature to whoever is doing the consuming, maybe they want Jesus inside them in a non-sexual way, so instead of buying a jesus-shaped dildo they go and buy a chocolatey jesus.

Personally I think consuming a chocolate jesus is slightly less offensive than having sex with his image. And there ARE jesus shaped dildos out there already.

Pffft! I'm over it, but no doubt some fellow Xians will feel the need to burn effigies, riot, declare a Crusade or murder over said offensive chocky.

I am sure JC can look after himself without piddly little humans having to defend him.

The day no "piddly humans" defends jesus isn't going to be good for too many humans.

    They're enjoying chocholate, not christ.

It's offensive because it makes a mockery of a religion. This is why many Native Americans were ticked off about Illionis University having an "authentic" Indian dance, which is religios to them.

How does it make a mockery of religion? Religion mocks itself anyway, self proclaimed christians dont even follow christs word. So who cares?

You said it yourself, theyre enjoying chocolate, not christ. but what if they were enjoying chocolate in Christs image, is that so horrible? I dont think it is...lets not blow this issue out of the water.

Nothing is sacred afterall, appreciating jesus and chocolate is a great combination imo. They should come out with a whole series of them, Chocolate mohammed. Chocolate Ghandi. Chocolate Bhudda, Chocolate Mary Magdeline.

To someone like me, your dream means the downfall of humanity and the beginging of the apocolypse.

So forgive me if I don't stand and chear as this happens. What do you suggest we do with the beleivers?

Kill them all, it's the eventual "solution" to the religion problem, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if someone suggested it in the future once atheism gets a large majority.

I have yet to meet one atheist who wishes to kill "believers."

That bizarre European guy (German or something) who plastinates corpses and does exhibitions should do one of Jesus being crucified, where the flesh is taken off wrists and feet to show the painful spots, and the chest is opened/flayed to show the suffocation process.

    That would be interesting.

How tall was Jesus anyway? Hopefully it ends up a nice sculpture. Though its ****ing rediculous to eat it. Why the hell would one want to eat a beautiful sculpture which probably took a long time to finish? You can always buy chocolate from the stores...

It said it was a sculpture unveiled in an art gallery. Not in a candy store.

Just because its made out of milk chocolate doesn't mean its for human consumption. Hell, I've seen plenty of masterpieces made in chocolate (which, artistically, is an interesting medium) which are never meant to be eaten.

All these issues deal with the medium of expression - and chocolate certainly isn't a medium easy to find "offense" in, unlike the elephant dung Virgin Mary that made headlines some years back. If anything I would have though they'd take issue with the whole "naked Jesus" part.
