the senate threatens me!?

I'm at the lowest level of popularity with the senate and they gave me the mission to take carthage or "if you fail : the censor will investigate your faction". Has anyone else ever got this?, What happens?

Either they discover that your personal accountant was doing their job, and you're off the hook. They discover that you're corrupt and you're dead, or they discover that you're secretly ... and you commit suicide.
I've had the fortune to only have this happen once, forget about it, then go oh crap as my Personal accountant did their job.

what do you have to do to get the senate pissed off enough to ask your faction leader to kill himself? i've expanded quite a bit and i never do the senate missions, but i still have like 4 popularity points with them...the reason i ask is b/c i roleplay so i don't want to build imperial legions until i destroy the senate, and i'm sitting around wondering how long it will be before i can finally attack the senate
