Here in Australia, we manage to get the perfect (or not so) mix of North American and western European slang, 'sick' is used all the time, but you occasionally hear the good ol 'blimey' as well.
What about grouse? That's an Australian slang word I try not to dredge up too often. Probably because I want to hit people who say it....

As for your comment.....well......have in mind that greeks made a wall so persians can be directed towards hoplites.
And some geologist say that sediment of earth was made by sea activity in past 2500 years. So there is posibility that passage was a bit more narrow.
