I tried to fight a battle against the Sicillians as the Angevins. I had Prince Charles' army at the beggining of the game plus a unit of mercenary spearmen. Anyway, every time I tried to fight a battle with that army, the game would load the battle, I would see a flicker of the battle (before the speech starts) which was the camera panning across a group of Provencal Men-At-Arms but there was no ground under them! It looked as if they were levitating above ground. After that, the screen went black, meaning a normal computer would've crashed to desktop.

The 1.2 readme said it fixed a CTD with the mecenary spearmen, so I am quite confused. I tried this three times.

The Merc Spearmen were fixed in 1.1. Are you able to fight custom battles?

    [EDIT]
Have you unpacked the files? If so, did you delete the geography files?

    - NOTE: Due to a timestamp check, the following unpacked files will
cause the game to crash and must be deleted before the game is
    launched:

    data\descr_geography_new.txt
    data\descr_geography_new.db

Also how old are your graphics drivers? You could try updating to the most current version.

    Thanks.

EDIT: It turns out, I haven't unpacked anything, but the problem persists. I think I'll just try it without the Merc Spearmen.

Tried custom battle, didn't work either.

Have tried lowering your graphics settings?

Yes, they are on the lowest settings possible.
Vanilla, LTC, TLR, RPM, DLV and AD have worked perfectly on my computer.
I recently procured an Nvidia 5600 (hey, I used to have a 5200!) which is a big problem with M2TW's flashy graphics, but as long as I turned the settings down all the way, it is fine for all the other mods I've played.

If you set shaders to 1 it should speed it up considerably.

Was it working for you before you installed the 1.2 patch?

All fixed now. As it turns out, I didn't delete Vanilla's descr_geography.

    To save your pm-box today:

I played the adressed HRE campaign further, and still the Hungarian peasant archers were without skin and lack of unit-ui. Seems like custom mode (where these units are ok) uses other unit file-adresses than the SV-campaign, and i don't wonder about that, as i guess your codes refer not to the custom folder/files. Or do i have a special bug on my own?

They were using Peasant Archers rather than S Peasant Archers in the descr_strat. This will be corrected in the next patch.

Ah, what a nice simple fix ... will do it in my install already, too.

First of all congratulation on great work done.I have been recently experiencing CTD problems at the end of the turn of new campaign (patch 1.2) - admittedly I have added more money to the factions in descr_strat and have edited/added couple of units. There are no problems in custom battles.Problem of course might not be at all related to SV but jus wondering if anyone else had similar problem.

    @DaVinci
You're absolutely right ofcourse. In the meantime I've solved the problem. Actually my fault was that...I did not want to modify the main\data folder. I'm playing mostly a modified version of LTC (new units, skins, ancillary texts, bigmap) which I brought to my liking after a lot of pain and reading through tutorials and mod threads. So a little bit of hesitation plus some overconfidence (and the haste to try the new mod!) resulted in a big mess. After doing everything step by step I got it right flawlessly...
Thank you all the same for your post.

O.k., now I'm frustrated! I think I'm the victim of the merc spearmen bug. In campaign battles, whenever an army has a unit of merc spearmen the game CTD. The campaign can continue if I autoresolve (and I hate that).
On the other hand the log file says something about a missing animation file(?).
I thought the problem was fixed in the 1.2 patch and made sure I re-copied the descr-strat file from the patch. Is there another file I'supposed to check?
Also the galley and holk unit cards show as peasants but that's not a game breaker (If I remember from RTW it had something to do with export_unit and export_unit_enum text files corresponding to the correct model line e.t.c -haven't checked how it's done in M2TW).
Anyway, I'll try to attach the systemlog file and I will appreciate any ideas.

The merc spearmen were fixed in 1.1, but all all the 1.1 content is also included in 1.2.

You said you copied the 1.2 descr_strat? Does that mean you didn't copy the entire patch over 1.0? You need to install the entire patch, and make sure the \data & \SicilianVespers folders are in the Medieval II Total war folder.

Sorry I was'nt clear enough. I have copied the entire 1.2 patch. But going through the threads I saw there was aproblem with some unit and the solution was the descr-strat (although it had to do with the peasant archers) so I tried that too. Also I played with the skins in modeldb with something I read in the K&K thread (71...Lmail_Hmail.mercs to 74...Kmail_Kmail.crusaders) but I think that's for the knights and it had nothing to do with the problem.
The campaign works fine except for these points. I can avoid hiring spearmen mercs but if the AI has a unit I have to autoresolve (lost my Angevin Marseilles to the French because of autoresolve).
Anyway I'm at work now so I cannot look at it. I'm planning to re-install the patch again. Is the unit card glitch expected, or is it an indication that I have installed something wrong? Does the system.log file give any clue?

    Thanks again

I think something went wrong with the installation of the patch. What actually fixes the merc spearmen is the modelsdb file that lives in M2TW\data\unit_models. You must be using the 1.0 version.
