    Default Cultures and Factions

    guys,

couple of real newb questions but help would be appreciated...

    1. What do cultures actually do? What are they there for?

    2. To change a factions culture I had assumed I just changed the culture entry in the descr_sm_cultures file. However I have tried this and it just ctd's with no error.

So how do I change a factions culture? (I know there is a tutorial for setting up a new culture and I have tried to follow it as regards changing the culture but it don'twork)

It does work - perfectly, and a number of coders of differing mods have told me so

And I can confirm that it works too.

However you do not need a new culture and there is a thread on changing a faction's culture too but I did not write that and do not have a link for it - but check the Org and TWC tutorials (probably the Org).

A culture affects those elements of a faction which are in the UI folder and which are subfoldered into cultures - music, audio, portraits, buildings and other aspects listed in the above the new culture tutorial too.

To change a faction from one culture to another existing culture you just change the one line in descr_sm_factions file. The only instances where that could possibly cause problems are if by making change you now don't have the original culture used by any faction in descr_sm_factions, or if you give faction Carthaginian culture and that faction has ownership of extra buildings, both of those problems are fixable though - post again if that could be what you hit. Was that what you meant you were trying to do? Or where you trying to make changes to the culture itself?

As addition to what cultures do - if you take city belonging to different culture the presence of buildings they built adds a culture penalty which causes unrest. So you may want to use different cultures for factions even if you want appearance to be similar.

hmm, I'll go play with it and see what happens, there is definitely one faction that is causing it to CTD so I'll do it one at a time to see which one it is!

Nice to know I wasn't doing anything totally stupid though, thanks guys
