Default Possible to beat the Armies of the Roman Senate? 4 views

    Hi.

Well i started off as mighty greece and so far i've been able to crush every army i've come up against with my mighty full stack of spartan warriors but when i went up against the one of the full stack armies of the roman senate i got crushed.

My spartans didn't stand a chance against their legions which have 33 attack while my spartans only have 23. Is it possible to even beat the Roman Senate with Greece? Any1 have any strategies against them while playing as Greece?

    Thanks...

if you invade their territory, just stand as close as possible to a hill or mountain so they have to fight upwards. that's how i beat them without many losses (max 15-20%), if you fight on a plain or flat grounds, you'll lose or achieve a close victory.

i only used two legions to defeat the 5 or 6 senate legions, i placed one on the bridge near rome and the other on the foot of a mountain.

i think you can beat them with greek armies the same way i did with my legions: choose high ground and let them come to you.

Yes, it is almost easy to defeat the Senate with Greek Soldiers.

First off, a full stack of Spartans is cool and all, but has no flexibility.
Each of the Greek armies I ever employ only has a Maximum of 300 Spartans (coincidence). In order to prevent using them as a crutch. Spartans will never retreat, will never break, they will fight to the death in any battle and that is how I use them. As the ultimate delaying force.

Hoffman's Greek Army: (SPQR Large Unit Sizes)
    1 General
    3 Spartans
    8 Armoured Hoplites
    2 Sword Hoplites
    3 Greek Cavalry (Light)
    3 Cretan Archers

Array your Armoured Hoplites in a battle-line, ~ 5 men Deep to give them staying power. Advance SLOWLY towards the senate army or let them come to you.
Your goal here is to hold the Praetorians at bay while defeating any flank attacks Once your flanks are secure, move the Spartans (who should be held in reserve) around to envelope one side of the enemy army. Support with Cavalry.
Move the Cretans (do not give them fire at will, personally direct their fire)
Around the flank to the rear of the enemy army at relatively close range. 50-100 meters.
Fire at the largest surviving Praetorian units until they break and run or are killed to a man.

You also might want to try assaulting them at speed, catching them off-guard and unable to deploy to the flanks, then using Spartan-lead thrusts break through the center of their army and let your Sword Hoplites pour into the center of theirs.

Just because the Praetorians are good doesn't mean they're invulnerable, it just takes tactics, the ability to hold off the majority of their forces while you piecemeal their flanks and then bring the maximum brunt to bear against vulnerable areas in their lines.

Also remember to use a mix of units, full Spartan stacks look cool, but if you were to take a full Spartan stack against one of my Imperial Legions the end result would either be a crushing victory for me, or a Phyrric victory for you, depending on how well you were able to maneuver to defend your flanks.
I really liked Xena's solution to alot of problems.

    Kill them All.

Dominus's Greek Army: (SPQR Large Unit Sizes)
1 Foot General of Sword Hoplites (g)
    4 Spartans (s)
    8 Armoured Hoplites (a)
5 merc horse archers - cantabrian circle (h)
    2 greek cavalry (c)

    my battle setup against rome

    1st line: h - s - a - a - a - a - s - h

    2nd line: h - s - a - a - a - a - s - h

    3rd line: c - g - c - h

Like others said, a full hoplite army has zero flexibility. Rome is supposed to be hard to take, and if you play fairly (no bridge battles), then it will be VERY difficult. Playing as the Romans I always used 8-10 legions to take Rome, just wear them down by taking them head on. There are easier ways using the AI's stupidity to your advantage, but I always just surrounded Rome then charged.
The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be used until they try and take it away.

Awesome strategies fellas. Thanks a lot.

I don't think it is possible to play as the Roman Senate in the campaign map Samba unless maybe you edit a lot of stuff =/
