I also think it's ridiculous; seriously, scanning pork or driving a guy with a bottle of alcohol is against Islamic belief? I find that hard to believe.

heh...as far as I know, muslims cant consume pork or alcoholic products. Theres no rule about just handling the stuff, or about being near it. Thats beyond ridiculous if there is.

If a muslim cashier refuses to do his job, then just fire him. Everyone has to conform in our capitalist society, if you wish to reap the benefits that is, then you must conform to some degree.

I dont feel like such a hero, telling people to conform and whatnot...I feel dirty...

I see this as just another example of arbitrary rules that humans choose to place on themselves. Same as preserving their virginity. Theres no good reason for it, but to some people it really matters.

Human beings placing arbitrary rules on their lives is an example of the power of human will, and people should be free to live their lives like they want UNTIL it starts to affect other people. Then it becomes other peoples problem you see...

Muslims, dont try and change our society by making our grocery stores no longer carry pork products and our taxi cab drivers no longer ferry drunk people. Do not impose your arbitrary rules on the rest of society.

Infact by doing so they could save lives, so i think not ferrying drunk people because they are drunk is dangerous. But, what if the drunk dude puked in the car?

No I think not ferrying drunk people endangers more lives. Whatre they gonna do if they cant take public transportation, drive their own cars? Walk home drunk? Yeah, thats safe...

If hes gonna puke he can puke out the window, and if he pukes on the upholstery hes gonna have to pay extra. Cabbies have slimjims, they can threaten the guy with it if he doesnt pay.

Lol, what do you do when anybody refuses to do their job? You try to convince them to do it and if they still wont, you fire them. Shouldnt be treated differently just because hes muslim. What, do they expect us to cater to their special needs? like disabled people? Screw that. Not everyone elses fault that they have such a picky religion.

consider rastafarianism, those people seem pretty on the ball...

I think it is against their religion to handle pork directly, but by the time any meat makes it up to the cashier its wrapped in plastic or butcher's paper anyway, so that's kind of a moot point. A little respect for people and their needs is never a bad thing, but only a little. I think Target is doing the right thing by transferring people who refuse to do their jobs.

The cab drivers refusing to pick up people carrying alcohol is way out of line though. If they own the cab companies they can work as they please, but that freedom of choice will bite them in the ass when no one will ride in their cabs or shop at their stores.

As a muslim I also think it is extremely ridiculous. The reason pork is fobidden is merely because it is bad for our health not because it could spread some kind of hellish virus which automatically turn us into hell-dwellers when we touch it with our bare hands.

The same thing with alcohol. In Al Quran God says that we should avoid intoxicants if we wanna be successful because they cause more bad effects than good ones. So it is a pure 'personal advice' just like when a teacher tells his students to study hard so in the future they would have less chances to be bums on the streets.

it's against their beliefs to ring up pork, but not against their beliefs to work for a society that butchers pork.

I can touch pork, although I won't eat it. I can touch an alcoholic beverage, although I won't drink it.

That stuff about not scanning pork is plain absurd.

    Simple as that.

    slimjims are slang for... what?

A slimjim is what the muscle hired by Tonya Harding used to bash Nancy Kerrigans knee before the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

More precisely, a slimjim is much like a crowbar, only its used to pry open car doors.
