...You probably haven't heard of the movie Winter War, and I admit, I had forgotten about this classic as well. A gruelling 195 minutes in length, it is basically one epic battle scene with a few short intervals. Needless to say, 3 and a half hours of constant battle is quite numbing to the senses.

Anyway, much of it has been hosted on youtube, so I just thought I'd post it here for you to check out (it has subtitles). I'll attempt to get these clips in a somewhat chronological order.

The common culture of a tribe is a sign of its inner cohesion. But tribes are vanishing from the modern world, as are all forms of traditional society. Customs, practices, festivals, rituals and beliefs have acquired a flut and half-hearted quality which reflects our nomadic and rootless existence, predicated as we are on the global air-waves.

well those are all the battle scenes of the movie. There's alot more in the beginning of the film though. Like the mobilization and rather blunt (and uniquely Finnish)farewells. Not many lads came back in one piece.

Its not the whole film, sorry. 195 minutes is a lot to host on youtube.

Well I didn't check those videos, but I think there's one battle scene missing.
It's the part where Martti is ordered to send greetings to the new company commander in fierce artillery barrage.

When he finally makes it there alive, the commander asks what message he was supposed to bring, and Martti answers: "Hi", then the company leader gets shot in the head, and Martti goes back.

right after that the finns are supposed to flush out some soviets from a nearby bunker.

That was one of the best scenes in the movie IMO.

I meant the taking of the bunker by the fifth company. Anyways its there, the sixth one. Gotta love the conversation in the beginning of the clip.

Yep, Winter War was a great film, I love it. Anyone seen "Ambush?" http://www.amazon.com/Ambush-Peter-F...169262-1436844
It takes place after the Winter War and has that same feel to it, another great film. check it out if you like Winter war.

And watched the grisly pilgrims go that walk the roads of Death,
And I have seen black valleys gape, abysses in the gloom,
And I have fought the deathless Ape that guards the Doors of Doom."

These movie translations are always very crappy. The more familiar name for this film would be "Rukajärven tie". I haven't actually seen that one though.
I also recommend the black-white version of the Tuntematons Sotilas, by Edvin Laine. Well the newer colour version was good too, but it ain't got the same feeling in it.

And the guy who plays Määttä in the newer version of Tuntematon sotilas, looks just like my mormon english teacher. He's really creepy by the way. He looks just like this arfrisco guy's avatar here at twcenter.

I've been searching for this movie high-and-low here in Belgium. But of course, a very good European movie is less available here than the crappiest Hollywood productions. *sigh*

If you do find it, be sure to pick up the 195 minute version and not the 125 minute version.

the point is, that Finnish army used a lot of those m18 helmets (german ww1 helmets), maybe even newer models(ww2 german helmets), since we were allies of axis powers anyways. So there you go.

by the way in the 8th clip there was that medic who got hit in the stomach by shrapnel, he was then dragged into the horse sleigh. In the book he survived even after the war, that's what Martti tells, but the actual horse fell in ice, only to be dragged up by some 2 nurmolaiset. So that scene is just wrong

Is this Russia vs. Finland circa WW2? The names they're using seem Finnish...
