How are we going to do with portraits? Could we steal some from RTW? I really didn't like the ones in M2TW and I think we could easily make the portraits from RTW fit with the time period (with some basic photoshop skills). Sorry if this has already been brought up.

Oh, I forgot about those. Of course we should use those. But those only cover the Vikings and the peoples on the British Isles. We need portraits for the other factions, too. The portraits in RTW are much more like those in VI than the MTW ones.

good idea. I'm not sure they're in the same formats, but at least we can compare them and decide on a style. I have no total war game on this computer though...

There is alot of nice mods out there, but when you access the family tree you go: "wtf?" Cause half the portraits are taken from another game, and the other half look like a 6-year old painted them yesterday.
Our portraits should really "fit" with each other, if you understand me. (taking some from VI and some from RTW would make the family tree look weird)

Possibly. That's why we should get ourselves a gallery.

Does this link work? If not, I think you have to register there. That place has good Barbarian Avatars (mostly Celtic looking though, they also have Viking Invasion Avatars).

Hope that is of use (if you can access that link).

The RTW Barbarians are very Gallic in appearance, some of them may be useful but for the most part the helmets and jewelry is not accurate, neither is war paint. I'd say the MTW-VI portraits would be the best bet as a stop-gap measure.

Wow, I didn't realize there were so many of the VI ones. They look pretty nice! Unfortunately, and as I've said earlier, they only cover the northern peoples... I also read (possibly here in this sub-forum) that the Vikings considered long hair to be something feminine, and they would likely not have long hair as in these portraits. But maybe that's not even true.

Anyway, the M2TW ones don't differ horribly from the ones in VI in terms of style (except the VI ones vary a lot in "zoom" and the background is usually a gray gradient instead of a gray "texture"), but the RTW ones are a lot more "real" to me than either of VI and M2TW. The dimension for RTW and M2TW portraits are 50x70, but the VI ones are 50x74. Shouldn't be a big problem to adjust those 4 pixels either way, though.

Viking answer lady thinks they wore them long:

Usually only thralls (slaves) wore very short hair. Probably the average man wore his hair about collar or shoulder length, and his beard as long as was comfortable for him. A professional warrior might make other choices for hairstyle to minimize the hazard of having hair or beard grabbed in combat.

There's really 4 categories from the older games up there that are in any way relevant:

RTW_Bar_Gen: RTW Barbarian generals, very Classical Celtic, a handful might be useable.
RTW_Bar_Dip: RTW Barbarian agents, better but still look a bit too Antiquated, probably some could be used for Celtic factions at least.
VI_VI: MTWVI Viking Generals and Agents, good for Norse at least as a place-holder.
VI_Cat: MTWVI Saxon and Celtic Generals, Agents and Kings, good placeholder for the Celtic factions, Continental Germanic factions maybe use a mixture of the two.
VI_Cat_5: MTWVI Princesses, good placeholder for Norse, Celtic and Germanic at least.

I can't speak for their historical accuracy beyond the Celtic ones being alright for the Gaels.

I don't know if any of them are appropriate for the Slavic culture, unlikely to be of use for the steppe factions and Byzantines, for these we might find something in vanilla M2TW.

Well, if you look in the Nomad and Hun category of the portraits, you may find them quite suitable for what you are looking for in Slavic and Nomadic portraits.

I didn't mean to imply that they did, but could the portraits in the link above conceivably be used for Slavs?
