Thread: MTW - still playable?

Medieval is probably the most polished, and most fun game of the series in my opinion. It really did feel medieval. I do like M:2 aswell though, but for different reasons.

Agree. I loved the campaing map. Felt like chess.

I Can't fault any of the total war series for enjoyment.

Yes Mtw2 is the worst of the bunch for gameplay at the moment but it will be fixed.

Mtw1 is still a great game as is shogun.

My fave is Rome with the greek mod.

So what if the graphics aren't good In MTW1 at least you become a great strategist.

MTW XL and RTW are the best of all the TW series. I am currently playing a Novgorod Campaign in MTW XL and enjoying the heck out of it. I'm preparing for the Mongolian Invasion, and I have never experience it before (each time I Played, I Only played 50-100 turns, but this time its different. Different approach that is) Anyways, I find it much more enjoyable and less stressful because of less micromanaging like in M2TW. Overall, M2TW has no chance against the original.

I'm actually thinking about purchasing MTW/VI. I find M2TW boring unless I play it with mods, same with RTW/BI, as in their original states, they lack depth and accuracy to be truly immersed (at least these matter to me most as these games draw from history). The graphics are obviously very different in RTW and M2TW compared with the first games, but good graphics mean nothing when it comes to game play and over all features.

I remember first playing MTW1, looking at the 2D-sprite armies on the screen and thinking "things won't get much better than this"

While waiting for M2TW to be released, I reinstalled MTW1... The strategy part is still as excellent as it used to be, but once you're used to RTW/M2TW graphics it is very hard to go back to the battles in MTW1. MTW1 did some things better than its successors, but it also had its faults. Nostalgia sometimes makes us forget this

Immerssion is a huge factor, and the game feels right. M2TW doesnt feel medieval, and it just looks weird..

Only prob for me is that I have to play on 800x600 resolution or it crashes... and on my 19 inch monitor it is very hard to play that way.

Hate to admit it, but i started playing this again last night after 2 years away.
I have been playing either Rome or Mtw2 and i prefer mtw1 oer mtw2. Yes it's old but i feel that it's much more immersive and more importantly harder!!.

By the way will the XL mod work with the gold version?

Why do you hate to admit it? It's better than RTW and MTWII isn't it?

Oh, and yeah, it will work.

Exactly what happened to me, friend.

And yes, it does lack a little depth, but I find the Total Realism crew pick this up nicely. For example when I first got Rome, it was pretty good. But RTR simply blew me away.

As soo as I get the right comp, and MTR is released, Ohhhh baby.

These sort of replies are why i keep coming back to these forums.

You have summed up the entire total war series in one short line.
The graphics although weaker are more than functional, but the strategy of this game is top notch.

I re-installed this game 3 days ago with the XL 2.1 mod and i have to say that this game is the best of the lot period.

Once my eyes adjusted to looking at sprites and not blooooooom laden troops i realised the depth of this game.
You feel on the edge right from the off wondering if those lightly held towns will be under attack early on.

It's great stuff! stuff the graphics they look ok anyway.

You see that graphics aren't everything.
After playing MTW1 I new all my strategy and when I got RTW I wiped out my enemies.
All in All this is how I rate the total war series:
    STW:poor graphics great gameplay
MTW: better graphics than shogun, amazing depth and gameplay
RTW : Great balance excellent graphics, excellent gameplay(my favorite)
MTW2: Breathtaking graphics, poor gameplay(It disappointed me)

hmm i bought the total war eras package, only played a little bit of MTW (spent most of my time playing RTW and its mods ), is M:TW vanilla fun by itself, or is it like RTW and M2TW where you need to get mods to truly enjoy the game, and if you need to get mods, which ones are the best?

rep me if you like my posts, and it's highly likely you'll get some back

Honestly MTW vanilla is really all you need to enjoy but if you want a MTW1 mod I suggest Samurai Warlords.

At the moment i would rate the games as

    1= MTW1 + 2.1Xl mod
1= RTW + Greek extended mod
    3. Shogun
    4. MTW2 v1.1 with Lands to conquer

Ok so MTW2 is last but that doesn't mean i dislike it. I just feel that the other games are more polished.

It that CA went all out on Graphics for MTW2 but forgot to give it the great gameplay that the other total war games posses.
Most people play the total war series for the gameplay not the graphics otherwise STW and MTW1 would have flopped.

Sorry but I simply don't agree. Although M2TW is a good game, but it lacks the immersion and atmosphere that both Shogun and Medieval possess.

MTW1 with BKB mod is a great game. too bad i can't get his 2.1 patch, but still it's a great experience. The armies of Gospodin Velikii Novgorod have swept through all Eastern Europe beating the hell out of several german crusades.
This mod along with XGM for rome are taking alot of my free time
