    Default Portugese Strategy

I'm really new, but I've played Rome for a year now online. Online in M2TW, what would be an effective strategy and lineup to use portugal against a lineup of heavy infantry and cavalry?

Well, your parameters are pretty vague, so I have to assume a bit, but in the early campaign game I would use some Jinettes, Mailed Knights, Javilenmen and some spear militias. Cheap and easily trainable. Skirmish, flood, and flank sort of thing. Standard stuff.

Though if you're looking for a multiplayer strategy, I think it'd be a bit more complicated since humans aren't predictable...

What faction are you facing? What strategy? Terrain? Period? Economic situation? Et cetera.

It'd help if you could provide a clearer picture of where you're coming from.

    Cheers.

Just go completely gay, recruit all missle cavalrly and destroy anyone out in the field. Then get like 4 units of infantry to beat down settlements and hold infantry in place.

A good strategy for the early Portugese game is to have a line of melee infantry (doesn't need to be too good, just enough to hold a line for a little while) with javelin infantry behind them, preferably on slightly higher ground. Use your Jinetes on the flanks or as general killers (the armour-piercing stat really helps here). When your Jinetes are out of ammo, you can also use them as some decent light-medium cavalry. Keep a unit or two of mailed knights for charging flanks and the rear outright, and to intercept any enemy flankers.

Swap in more advanced units as they become available to replace weaker or obsolete units. Pike militia and Aventuros are great for holding the line, so start using them as quickly as you can.

Comon you've never sent out an army of all missle cavalry? Greatest way to deal with rebels or any army in the field lol.

Possibly... I was on a hill. I threw spears. Charge, flank, retreat, rinse, repeat, final swarm = victory.

I really can't take credit for that victory. Jinettes just pwn game mechanics.

Thanks for your help...but I'm talking about Multiplayer battles, against a lineup of Heavy infantry, strong archers, and cavalry...

Early Portugal simply isn't an infantry power, so don't try. Mercenaries and light troops should be used, and take on weak opponants at first. Take Moorish Spain, and maybe North Africa. Then be open minded. Try to take rebel settlements in the Meditterean islands, and do not be afraid to try and take Ireland or Wales.

portugal is probably the best balanced power in the game late period.

line up with a mixed bag of adventuros (pikemen), dis. port knights, musketeers, jinetes, knights/conquist

run down any ha's or harrass their heavy cav with jinettes
get close in enough with musketeers for the full effects and for misses to hit their main infantry line, pull back behind pikes, flank with dis port knights (check out their attack rating). mop up their exhausted heavy cav with your own and envelope w/heavy cav. finish their infantry with jinettes

portugal is the easiest start mp faction, this shouldn't be a problem
