Default Platinum 1.8 hoplite Spear Problem

    Game: RTW 1.5 + Platinum 1.8
ugh, so heres the problem (dont have a screenshot but i think you understand)

units in hoplite formation who hold the spears on an upward angle (the ones on the back lines especcially) dont lower em when the enemy gets near so they start hitting them with spears they are holding at an 45degree angle...

so Thank you for the upcoming (hopefully) help!

PS! i hope i made the topic in the right place

If the hoplites are getting unplayable because of animation problems, you can always try different animations.

    1. Make a copy of your desc_model_battle.txt so you can return to it if it doesn't work.
    2. Look in Data\Text\export_units.txt for the lookup name of the unit (the one with the underscores in).
    3. Find your relevant unit in Data\descr_model_battle.txt. Find the skeleton line, and make sure you understand it. It consists of the header "skeleton", followed by a tab, followed by 2 skeleton models. The 1st model is the primary weapon animation, while the 2nd model is the secondary weapon animation.
    4. Find a different spear unit in Data\descr_model_battle.txt - try Italian spearman (IIRC it's aor_italy_spearmen). Copy the skeleton line from it, and paste it instead of the original skeleton line on your hoplite unit.

And with that, your hoplite unit will now use the underhand spear animation of Italian spearmen. If you don't like that, find another spear unit to your taste, and paste in the relevant information. And if it mucks up completely, go back to your original copy of descr_model_battle.txt.

Of course, this doesn't solve the overall problem of how the hoplite animation doesn't work in the game, but it's a solution that will allow you to continue playing immediately while you wait for a proper tech support person to get back to you.

ha, what am i going stupid or something? but it seems so. for example... Gaul Chosen spearmen and Corinthian hoplite both seem to use fs_spearman as skeleton (in 1.8 atleast) but chosen spearmen work nicely, and corinthian doesnt...

i do know about the files and editing enough to make a new unit from scratch but i cant seem to get a handle on this...

now im going to go sit in the corner and wait untill someone comes and says something smart and makes me look like a total dumb*ss..

If you want a proper, detailed solution to your problem, rather than the DIY one I've suggested, you might want to ask the proper tech support guys in the RTR forums. Here are the RTR forums, for which you'll have to register. Here is the RTR PE subforum. Post your problem there, with as much detail as you can muster. I'll also point one of the RTR guys in your direction here, so check here as well.

I've realized this problem as well and cant quite see the reason of moving on to 1.8 yet. If anyone has played the 1.7 version of RTRPE with the hic sunt draconnes mod then they should see what type of animations and formations abilities would really enhance RTRPE's gameplay. The only problem joey had with his last release was some minor animation problems with his spearmen, and (before he completely disappeared) joey said he'd make changes and hinted at a update for RTRPE 1.8. It's since mid-late Jan. that he's said this though and he's not been making new releases or posts for that matter though...I wonder how hes doing Oo...
If anyone could give me some tips and pointers I'd be more than happy to see if I could reverse engineer Joey's work and make it for 1.8 since I sort of need it for personal uses anyways...
