Default do you believe in intellegent life in the universe?

ok just considering the billions of galaxies and within each galaxy there are thousands- millions of planets, and each solar system has dozens of planets. now just on the off chance that there is life supporting conditions on 1 planet in each galaxy( im sure its much higher). not to mention the fact that our ideas of what life-supporting mean ( as it gets wider and wider). to me, it says that the odds of life in this galaxy are absolute, there are just to many planets that would be able to support life, and to think that that where life can exist, it will exist. just ponder how many different earth type environments are out there, probably millions if not more, and there have probably been planets that have had millions of years of life on them long before it started on earth. so again your odds of intellegent life gets even higher. the odds are just inconceivible high, just because of the great expanse of the universe. im not even considering the hundreds of moons in each solar system, of which the possibilty of life in our solar system is pretty high on certain moons.

so basically if i were a betting man i would say
possibility of life in the universe= absolute
possibility of intellegent life = absolute

    so whats your opinion?

I believe there is but we will never find it unless they come to us.

No, and if there is it doesn't matter, we will never find them.

I believe it to be improbable.

And even if there was, communication across long distances would be such a disparate adventure that the universe would have the big crunch before we even understood each other's languages and culture...

why is it improbable? is everyone so ethnocentric ( earthcentric?) that they can't believe life exists elsewhere in the vast expanse of size thats so unconcievable. so what makes earth so special that it can't happen elsewhere in the universe?

the discussion is also not whether we can contact other forms of life, because this is much more "improbable" then odds which are hugely in favor of intelligent life existing.

Wrong forum, more of an athenaeum type of topic.

Yap. I am still looking for intelligent life. I have tried large parts of the USA, Canada and Central America. No luck yet. My recon reports of Europe are very discouraging as well.

Of course there is life out there. our possibility of understanding anything unlike us is so limited, I think if aliens exist they will be far more fantastic than anything portrayed in any movie.

Movie aliens are always amalgams of animals on Earth anyway.

just look at how much intellegent ( non-human) life there is on this planet. if humans were the only thing to develop then just maybe the odds against life would be good. for all we know there is life on titan, it has water. all it takes is microscopic bacteria and time.

edit: besides its commonly thought that during the earths formation, that our water came entirely from asteroid bombardment, and if thats the case then life was "seeded" on earth from space. why couldnt this happen on other planets?

We've already found evidence of life, primitive monera, on Mars and such. I think it's very likely that sentient, sapient life has evolved somewhere else in our galaxy, and most definitely somewhere else in the universe. It's simple law of averages- there are too many galaxies with stars and planets in the universe for there not to be some sort of sapient organism.

Simple - if it exists, then there is a high chance that they will want to colonize. It would not take them very long to get across all of universe.

'It would not take them very long to get across all of universe' - Are you being serious? Even if they were travelling at some astronomically high speed, it would still take ages to 'travel across all of universe'.

yes, even at the speed of light, it would take a very long time just to get across one galaxy, and the space between galaxies is very very far, much longer then a lifetime of lightspeed travel. in reality, you would need some sort of space bending wormhole type travel, and if it was possible, or say "warp speed" it would require massive amounts of energy in relation to the output of a star. so while as said above the probabilities of intellegent are pretty much a guarentee, but contact with them is highly unlikely.

Ages in relation to us, not that long in comparison to the life of the universe. Maybe 2 billion years.

No you don't. If you accelerate at a constant 1G, you would across the galaxy in less then a year, ship time. Getting from one galaxy to another would take well under a decade.

And there are millions of galaxies. There might not even be intelligent life in the ones closest to us. What makes you think that that they're going to be technologically more advanced than us?

I find it hard not to believe there to be other intelligent life in the universe. The numbers don't lie.

Even millions of galaxies would only take a few million years to go though them all. Besides, if intelligent life is even somewhat common, then that implies there is a extremely high chance that one of them have started millions or billions of years ahead of us.

What numbers? The aliens that we have found so far?
