    Default New LCD TV

So I decided to spend my hard earned money on a new LCD TV rather than a new rig. Is it worth it? For my own purposes I believe so. I find myself playing older games anyhow. My question is, how do I connect it to my PC. I know I need another cable (my tv has a monitor connection) but what should I get for the best picture quality? Does the video card matter? Any help / advice is appreciated.

Well me and my bro use his lcd tv with the laptops. We use a rgb cable connecter. Not sure if the tv itself came with it, but there are 2 different cables that work depending on the tv. The rgb, and also the dvi to hdmi connection. Hope that helps, -Leon

My bro hooked up an S Video cable to my old TV and I was utterly surprised how much of a difference it made. Just from my knowledge of electronics I'd reccomend a Phillips or Sharp LCD or Plasma TV. Sony tends to be overpriced and full of ***** when it comes to TV's or stereos.

I got a Samsung 40 inch. But I have all the available connections mentioned thus far in the thread (I think) so I'm wondering about which will provide the best picture quality? Will it all be the same?

From the little that i no, (which isnt much about tv's). I know hdmi is the best. So if you have a dvi to hdmi then your set, if not then the other cables should work. As for quality, i myself honestly cannot tell much of a diff, but dont mind me im 1/2 blind anyways. -Leon

Well I do have that connection for sure. I guess my only worry now is that I'll have to spend another $100 or more to get the cables. Hopefully that isn't the case. As for picture quality, I can do without the top of the line stuff. The best game I can run is RTW on medium settings. So I won't be able to get the best quality, but I'll get some epic looking battles on a 40 inch tv.

If you have a weak gpu i would definitly not recommend going for such a large screen. You will be forced to run it at a low res and it will just look pixelated.

Well I've already purchased the TV and I'm having no regrets. Haven't connected my pc yet tho. But you think it will decrease the quality with the screen being so large? After all, I sit rather far away from the screen so I would imagine the pixelation would be minimized by the viewing distance.

If you have a slow card with little vram you will have trouble running it at a res designed for a screen of that size. You will want to run it at about 1600x1200 if your card can't handle that res at an acceptable speed you are lookign at poor picture quality.

Basically the bigger the screen the more you have to up the resolution to have the same level of detail. You are goign to want a graphics card that is at least as good as the 7600GT and 256 megs of video ram (mininum) I would have thought but my knowlage on this matter is limited due to not being lucky enough to posses such a monolith of a screen

Thats assuming though that his TV even has a resolution of 1600x1200. He is talking about an LCD TV, not a computer monitor, and last time I checked, AVERAGE TV's, even LCDs dont come with that type of rez. From what I've seen, they are mostly all about 1024x768.

    This is my TV:
    http://www.samsung.com/Products/TV/L...Specifications

My video card is an ATI Radeon 9200 128 mb card (dated, I know).

So it sounds like this card won't be able to run a good quality on this size of a screen.

As far as the TV goes, I love it. I haven't acquired HD cable yet, but even without it the picture quality is enhanced immensely. I can throw open all the blinds and windows with no glare (LCDs dont have a glass plate over the screen) and can play games for hours without fear of a burned image on my screen. As far as I'm concerned, LCD is the way to go. I can't imagine why people waste money on a plasma.

Your ati should suffice you just wont make use of all the latest bells and whistles. As for Lcd vs. plasma , plasmas now have a shelf life of at least 40 years without burn out and price is still coming down. Lcds on the other hand can not handle true black and you will consistently see gray banding where you should be seeing just black , also this i've heard is about the lowest the market is going on lcds so still expensive. Should buy DLP TV. best of both worlds there.

I seem to have black just fine on my tv. Maybe if I had a side by side comparison I would notice the difference however. But yes, I did notice that plasmas were mostly cheaper than LCDs.

yeah, afaik, DLPs can have the highest quality of all TVs, but they are similar to projection TV's no? So they cannot be flat like LCDs or Plasmas? My physics teacher in highschool explained that they work by reflecting light off of either 1 or 3 chips (depending on the TV, but 3 is better) each of which is made up of thousands of tiny mirrors which can change position to reflect at the screen, or a way to change brightness and color. This technique alows it to have a gigantic variety of colors. If its a 1 chip TV, all three colors are reflect off of it, if it has 3, however, each color has its own chip, therefore increasing the possible color variety to... I guess the power of 3.
