Default In what areas is RTW> than M2TW?

Right now I only have M2TW... but I saw that on my computer the graphics for M2TW and RTW would basically be the same, because of how terrible my computer is. (I have to play M2TW on the absolute lowest settings...)

The only thing that would be different is having clone soldiers it would seem...

I also enjoy Roman times more...

So everyone... would I enjoy RTW?

In rtw, the units are made of plastic.

the map isn't as detailed... But the current mods that are out for RTW make up for it

For me, Rome always beats M2TW, it serves my interests the best. Whether it serves your the best or not, I don't know, but I recommend it over M2.

Couldn't agree more. Medieval 2 might beat RTW in graphics, but I'm still more comfortable with Rome. The battle mechanics, the variety of units, the sheer epic feeling, and of course, the era all make RTW THE best. With some mods, Rome is many times as diverse as M2. I mean, there's so much to choose from.

Needless to say that M2 was quite a disappointment. It lacks just about everything except the graphics update. Well, the modders will improve it, no doubt about it, but in the meanwhile, I'll be playing Rome.

It all depends on which era you find more interesting...personally I enjoy the more classical war and combat era so RTW is more my thing but I do enjoy the M2TW sometimes...it's just a matter of style

First off, Medieval 2 sucks in the Battle Mode because the units pause for 5 seconds when your giving them orders and that latency screws everything up. For example, you have a group of knights and you want to flank the enemy's infantry in RTW the cavalry charges in an instant while in Medieval 2 it takes 8 seonds for them to get into position and they don't even charge. So, if you enjoy battles (like me) you should definately get RTW; I just find it so much easier

Personally I like how the calvary is more responsive in RTW, when you tell them to charge they all charge. In MTW2 sometimes they just seem to stop short of there target.

I'm curious about this as well.

I'm strongly considering to go out tomorrow and look for the gold edition of Rome TW.

I have a few questions though:

    - Are there any mods that increase the graphics (or resolution of units with better skins and such)?

    - Can you make it where you can have more than 'huge' armies? I've heard this talked about only in rumors so I'm not sure. Yet since my computer can run M2 on full graphics with huge armies (more or less, shadows are turned down though)... I think I could handle epic armies in Rome... but is it possible to say get 10,000+ soldiers in a battlefield in Rome as normal via mod?

    - Are the factions more unique than M2 unit roster wise?

    - Is it more tedious playing as the Romans due to their large empire as opposed to M2 that starts out small and ends big. I find the larger your empire in M2 the less fun it is, due to how much you have to micro-manage.

I like Medieval 2 greatly.. but the lack of any proper AI (without campaign ruining bugs) and numerous bugs is starting to wear me out of it after a few months. Whenever more major mods are completed I'll dive back in... until then I'm considering Rome if it peaks my interest more so than M2.

I'm regretting only getting into the Total War series with Medieval 2... seems I missed much.

Yes, there are. Mods change sky, grass, terrain, and the new unit skins are simply beautiful in some mods. Just take your pick.

The limit is about 250 (?) men per unit, so probably you'll see bigger battles than in Medieval 2. Battles in Rome seem to be more epic, don't know what causes it exactly..

    - Are the factions more unique than M2 unit roster wise?
Well, there seems to be overall more units, because they're basically unique for each faction. But per faction, the unit number is pretty much the same as in M2. No need to worry though, the mods add a LOT of new units.

The whole point in Rome, as I see it, is to conquer. It fits much better in the roman era than in Medieval era. Holding your mighty empire together isn't that great challenge, just let the cities manage themselves and be ready to face the barbarian hordes. It's always awesome to explore new lands and crush different cultures.

Anyway, you're doing a wise thing, buying Rome.

Sounds pretty good, I think I'll go look for it tomorrow. Hopefully it won't cost more than thirty bucks for Rome and BI.

What are some of the best mods for Rome btw? I know Rome Total Realism is supposedly one of the best mods... yet what about mods for new skins, graphical overhaul, blood, dust, and other visual (or even interfacical) improvements?

I appreciate the help. The answers are most helpful and in the case of army sizes, quite satifying, as one of my biggest gripes of M2 is the lack of large scale warfare (due to the engine I suppose).

Rome is imo definitely better that MTWII. Although MTWII has better grafics, Rome has better gameplay, better balanced Mods(and lots of 'em), more interesting time period and to top it of a good expansion for early dark ages(also cool Mods). My advise is, get Rome+Barbarian invasion, download the RTR MOd and built up your own roman(or other) empire! It can't get any better than that.

If you have to play on lowest settings with M2TW, then definitely rome is the better choice. M2TW wins on graphics and some other things but it has very little immersion, no epic feel, and its a lot more tedious in the campaign compared to rome.

My suggestion is to use the SPQR mod which is here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=32

It has the best skins IMO of any of the mods, and is perfect for a grand roman campaign. It is also challenging and is not hard to understand.

I have tried EB and RTR and while Im sure some people would prefer them, I didnt like them much at all.

Rome TW takes place in early b.c. M:tw doesn't.

Well I bought the Gold edition of Rome: TW which came with Barbarian Invasion.

    Question:

Does Rome not allow you to use the mod switch that is used for mods in M2? Because I'd like to try Rome Total Realism and a few other mods (not the least of which the player-made patch). Yet I don't like the idea of reinstalling the game several times just to have vanillia + mods.

Also what are some recommended mods for things such as skins, blood, AI, sky, balance, and increased army size (250 per unit?), and so forth? Over 300 mods to browse through and I'm not really sure which is which.

I'm kind of confused how I should go about mods in Rome, as it seems... different and more complicated, not to mention, far more numerous.

Maybe I dove into the deep end too quickly...

my advice: play vanilla campaign for a while, get used to the UI and general feel of the game, then download SPQR mod, and prepare to be blown away
