Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks. Finished it earlier today after reading the last 100 pages through the night with only the dim illumination cast by my mp3 player to to see the words. Yes, that's how good it is and how sad I am.

    Synopsis:

Set before and during the great war, "Birdsong" captures the drama of that era on both a national and a personal scale. It is the story of Stephen, a young Englishman, who arrives in Amiens in 1910. His life goes through a series of traumatic experiences, from the clandestine love affair that tears apart the family with whom he lives, to the unprecedented experiences of the war itself.

Don't let the underlying love story put you off. Still one of the Best War novels there is. Read it because of my upcoming A-Level English Literature World War One Literary Works module, and actually enjoyed it. I like Historical Fiction novels anyway.
