    Try this,

    Click Start>Run>Msconfig

You should get a new screen come up, click on the tab at then end called startup. Now uncheck everything EXCEPT anything referring to explorer or sys tray. Then Reboot.

Service pack 2 has vital security updates in it. Try clearing unwanted programs from start up and defragging your drive, which should speed things up.

The built in windows defrag Is Start-accessories-systemtools-defrag

Yeh, vital! keep tellin yerself that, but we all know Windows Firewall is probably the most useless piece of software to ever be produced. You might as well just open up all your ports and let hackers flood in and viciously attack your computer</exaggeration>

Windows updates aren't exactly a big deal. You'd still be better off using a third party firewall over the SP2 one.

I always presumed SP2 covered alot of flaws in how windows operated which led to security vulnerabilities. Silly me.

Its never a good idea to ignore security updates, they're not just for the firewall. There are vulnerabilities throughout windows that are patched with more than one hundred available updates. All I have to say is you're a fool if you don't install them.
