Tonight on the History Channel, at 9 est, is a show about the 300.

mods: since this is impending and didn't want it to get lost in the LENGTHY thread about the 300, I started a new thread. Feel feel to combine it with the 300 thread if it's better there.

I think it should be its own thread because it is talking about the historical version of the Battle of Thermopolae, Not the movie/comic book version.

I like how history channel is showing that, all they have on that much any more is Modern Marvels, which gets boring after watching it all day... History Channel needs to show more ancient and medieval history shows. I know that they are airing/aired the Dark Ages, which looks like a cool series.

Hi guys! What is this history channel about? Is this a cable network? Which country does this channel serves?
I've watched this movie 2 nights ago at the cinema and man that was really good! It was a vast improvement over the 300 spartans and rightfully so because of the modern tech compared to then. Can anyone please tell me which is more historically acurate?

The Hitler channel is about history provided its WW2, evidently history began and ended with WW2. Shows about other eras are rare and usually tied into movies (hence the 300 one). Also the "History" channel loves angels and end of the world shows. Needless to say its all too rare that history finds its way into the History channel. That said from website its avaliable in UK and US and yes its a cable channel.

True. History international is waaaay better than the regular HC though. Sure theres still a lot of WW2 stuff, but it still has more variety than it's little brother. It's only available with extended cable packages though. At least thats how I get it.

Yeah I dont mind WW2 stuff really but be nice to see more variety, my main problem is the types of topics they focus on. Do I really need an hour show detailing alleged Hitler drug usage? We got thousands of years of history, its bizarre to focus most of airtime on 6 years. Sadly History International isnt available on Time Warner here in NYC, a shame if it really is better.

Thanks danzig. Sadly, it seems there's isn't such a channel on cable vision in my country (not that I know of) except for occassional screening of historical documentaries on national geographic.

Thanks Balikedes. I share your opinion on this. What I dislike about 300 is the introduction of mutant-like warriors. Immortals were elite warriors not mutants.

I saw this special yesterday, I didnt like it much. I dont think it was done very well.

The parts I enjoyed most were when they outlined every weapon and every piece of armor that the spartans used. Like the Dory spear and the corinthian helmet...and the sword, forgot what it was called...Spatha I think....and their Lamellar armor...

That was interesting, everything else wasnt.

alleged you say? You doubt the fact?

I see a lot of specials on the history channel, they talk about the romans a lot. Just a few days ago I remember watching a special about Justinian. They also just finished up Barbarians week, where they talked about the huns, they vandals, the goths...etc...

But they dont call it the Hitler channel for nothing.

Shrug alot of details we dont know for sure about Hitler, my main problem is why waste the air time. Btw this is the show Im talking about
    http://www.thehistorychannel.co.uk/s...ramme_2603.php

Title of the show High Hitler and includes such important information as:
"But the Fuhrer himself was an appalling hypochondriac who abused laxatives and suffered for much of his life from stomach cramps and embarrassing flatulence. And that was simply the start..."

Its tough to take the channel seriously with such content.

Those are few and far between and generally the quality of the shows are pretty bad. Obviously there are exceptions but the problem is that they ARE exceptions making claims at being the "history channel" rather dubious.

The History Channel, and especially History International are both very entertaining if your a casual history fan. I love those channels, especially HI but I find myself more and more annoyed by inaccuracies and misportrayals.

If you don't read history then it's excellent, but with a more in-depth knowledge of History I've come to find they greatly exaggerate the importance of whichever event they're covering.

An excellent example is that 300 spartans special. At the end, the people talking are going on and on about how Thermopylae was the beginning of Greek unity and saved Democracy etc...

They fail to mention that Greece wouldn't united as a independent nations until the 19th century (or the Byzantine Empire if you prefer) and that the defeat of the Persians signalled a new era of Greek civil war, I.E. Peloponesian War.

Saving Democracy was also laughable. Democracy in the modern day is derived much more from Roman Republican limited Democracy than reactionary Athenian democracy. Not to mention Democracy was "exterminated" by Lysander when he sailed into Athens and installed the 30 tyrants. Granted they were overthrown, but Democracy never really made an enormous comeback from the loss of the war.

Also, the people ranting on about this were military historians, not Greek historians. The only one whose opionion actually matters who was on the show was the author of "Gates of Fire" but they didn't show his ending statement.

Excellent channels for the casual history fan, but they're beginning to annoy the piss out of me.
